I LIKE THIS SCULPTURE

This striking bronze sculpture, "Reclining Figure", by Frederick Edward McWilliam (1909-1992), was relocated in 2013 from the David Keir Building quadrangle to the main quadrangle at the Lanyon Building, Queen's University Belfast.

McWilliam, a renowned Northern Irish surrealist sculptor born in Banbridge, County Down, primarily worked in stone, wood, and bronze. His notable commissions include the "Four Seasons Group" for the 1951 Festival of Britain exhibition. McWilliam's work was exhibited at Waddington Galleries, London, and he received a major retrospective at the Tate Gallery in 1989.

Throughout his career, McWilliam received numerous accolades, including an Honorary D.Litt. from Queen's University Belfast in 1964, a CBE in 1966, and the Oireachtas Gold Medal in 1971. His works are featured in prestigious public collections worldwide, such as the Museum of Modern Art (New York) and Tate Britain.

The Queen's University estate boasts over 250 buildings, 98 of which are listed. The Lanyon Building, inaugurated in 1849 and named after its architect Sir Charles Lanyon, stands as the centrepiece of the estate.
