A COLLECTION OF BUOYS

THIS RATHER RANDOM COLLECTION HAS SINCE BEEN RELOCATED

The collection of maritime buoys that I photographed in 2017 was at the time located in Cathedral Gardens, an area in front of St. Anne's Cathedral in Belfast, sometimes referred to as "Buoy Park" by locals. To be honest, the presentation of the buoys did not appeal to me at any level.

Ownership and Assembly

The buoys were originally presented to Belfast City Council by the Commissioners of Irish Lights (CIL), the authority responsible for lighthouses and navigation aids around the coast of Ireland. They were installed in Cathedral Gardens in 1983 as part of a landscaping project.

Significance

While not individually unique or historically significant, the buoys collectively represented Belfast's rich maritime heritage and the city's connection to the sea. They served as a reminder of Belfast's important role as a port and shipbuilding centre.

Relocation

The buoys were relocated to the Titanic Quarter in 2019, near the Abercorn Basin, to make way for a new Blitz memorial in Cathedral Gardens. The relocation was part of a broader regeneration project in the area around Ulster University. The buoys are now on permanent display in the Titanic Quarter, where they continue to celebrate Belfast's maritime history.
