SIGMA QUATTRO CAMERAS

The big update this month, if one excludes the PhotoShop Beta, was that I obtained an unused Sigma DP3 Quattro at a really good price. I already own a DP1 but have been unable to obtain the DP0 or the DP2. I should mention that I also use a Sigma DP3 Merrill.

The Sigma dp0 Quattro is a discontinued[ fixed-focal length APS-C digital point-and-shoot camera, announced by Sigma on February 10, 2015.

Like other cameras in the dp Quattro series,it features a 29-megapixel Foveon X3 sensor, but is said to produce images equivalent to that of a 39-megapixel bayer sensor camera.

The dp0 Quattro has the widest focal length compared to other models of the dp Quattro range, with a 35 mm equivalent focal length of 21mm.

PCMag called the dp0 Quattro a "niche product", due to its fixed wide angle lens, with some quirks such as its uncommon grip shape, slow processing and writing per capture and battery life, but praised it for the quality of images produced, with its superior sensor and lens, giving the dp0 Quattro a rating of 3.5 out of 5.

During the CP+ [jp] show held in 2015, USA Today did a first impressions review of the dp0 Quattro, which mentioned that the improved sensor on the dp0 Quattro had "faster processing times", compared to older Foveon-based cameras, but still pales in speed compared to other cameras in the market at that time. The camera is described with low lens distortion despite its wide angle lens but with poor battery life, with a conclusion that the camera is "an endearingly oddball".

The operation of the Foveon X3 sensor is different from that of the Bayer filter image sensor, which is more commonly used in digital cameras. In the Bayer sensor, each photosite in the array consists of a single light sensor (either CMOS or CCD) that, as a result of filtration, is exposed to only one of the three primary colours: red, green, or blue. Constructing a full-color image from a Bayer sensor requires demosaicing, an interpolative process in which the output pixel associated with each photosite is assigned an RGB value based in part on the level of red, green, and blue reported by those photosites adjacent to it. However, the Foveon X3 sensor creates its RGB colour output for each photosite by combining the outputs of each of the stacked photodiodes at each of its photosites. This operational difference results in several significant consequences.

Because demosaicing is not required for the Foveon X3 sensor to produce a full-colour image, the colour artifacts ("coloured jaggies") associated with the process are not seen. The separate anti-aliasing filter commonly used to mitigate those artifacts in a Bayer sensor is not required; this is because little aliasing occurs when the photodiodes for each colour, with the assistance of the microlenses, integrate the optical image over a region almost as big as the spacing of sensors for that colour. On the other hand, the method of colour separation by silicon penetration depth gives more cross-contamination between colour layers, meaning more issues with colour accuracy.

MEDIATEMPLE TO GODADDY MAY 2023

Within a few months all my sites will be self hosted and while that does present many problems I can say, based on experience, that shared hosting and even dedicated WP hosting is, at best, unreliable. For a number of years I used MediaTemple and while I may not have been over impressed by the quality of service I was reasonable happy. However, MediaTemple was purchased by GoDaddy and my sites were transitioned this week and I am less than pleased.

However, to be fair, the site OSX128.COM which is now hosted by GoDaddy is faster than any of my self hosted sites ... this is mainly because it is what is known as a 'headless' WordPress site.

I PLAN TO VISIT CORK CITY AND COUNTY

I am planning to spend the second week of May 2023 in Cork City and I have decided that the Sony FX-30 will be my main camera and my backup will be an old Sigma DP1 Quattro which is a bit of a risk. I have yet to decide what lenses to bring with me.

PHOTOGRAPHS OF SIR JOHN ROGERSON'S QUAY IN DUBLINPHOTOGRAPHED USING A SIGMA DP3 QUATTRO

The Dublin and Kingstown (now Dún Laoghaire) Railway was the first suburban railway in the world. The line began operating in 1834 and was built by William Dargan, an engineer from County Laois.
The idea for the railway arose from proposals by the merchants of Dublin to link the city with Dún Laoghaire Harbour, because the levels of silt at Dublin Port meant that large ships could no longer dock there and instead called at Dún Laoghaire. The line ran from Westland Row (Pearse Street) to Seapoint and shortly after was extended to Dún Laoghaire. Blackrock Station opened on 17 December 1834.

THE LAKE AT BLACKROCK PUBLIC PARK PHOTOGRAPHED USING A SIGMA DP3 QUATTRO

The following account was published 27 July 2013: St Patrick’s Church, Ringsend, was solemnly dedicated today by the Archbishop Walsh of Dublin. The Church, built in the Gothic style, has been constructed using Irish materials and now comprises sanctuary, transepts, side chapels, two sacristies, a confraternity room and a large store room. The foundation stone on the new Church had only been laid twenty months ago, and the building will serve the population of Ringsend, with Reverend Joseph Mooney serving as Parish Priest. Much of the work has still has to be paid for, and a subscription fund was opened with the Archbishop pledging £1,000 towards the cause.

AVIVA STADIUM KEPT BLOCKING MY VIEW SOME PREFER TO REFER TO IT AS LANSDOWNE ROAD

Aviva Stadium (also known as Lansdowne Road) is a sports stadium located in Dublin with a capacity for 51,711 spectators (all seated). It is built on the site of the former Lansdowne Road Stadium, which was demolished in 2007, and replaced it as home to its chief tenants: the Irish rugby union team and the Republic of Ireland football team. The decision to redevelop the stadium came after plans for both Stadium Ireland and Eircom Park fell through. Aviva Group Ireland signed a 10-year deal for the naming rights in 2009.

LIVING OUT OF A SUITCASETHIS SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING

Living out of a suitcase is a phrase meaning “to stay/live in several places temporarily, with only enough belongings to put in a suitcase”. To be honest, I never really give much to the expression until say this less than a minute from my front door.

COBH TRAIN STATIONPHOTOGRAPHED MAY 2023

When I arrived in Cobh the weather was beautiful but about twenty minutes later I had to return to the station in order to shelter from an intense thunder storm. I decided to get the next train towards Cork city centre but as the weather had improved I got off the train at Rushbrook but after about twenty minutes more rain arrived.

A DUCK AND A DRAKE AT CROSSES GREEN THEY WERE VERY FRIENDLY

The Crosse's Green area is one of the most historic areas in the city. The Dominican priory of St Mary's of the Isle was established here in 1229. In later centuries the area was a hive of industrial activity. Brewing, distilling, inshore fishing, and milling were dominant enterprises and timber yards were also established. With the decline of the industries in the late nineteen seventies the Crosse's Green area became quite shabby and run-down and featured some excellent examples of street art.

The opening of the South Bank office complex and Dean's Hall student-apartment complex in 1994 revitalised the area to some extent.

Crosse's Green is also home to Meitheal Mara, a group devoted to researching the history of the Irish currach.

RORY GALLAGHER TRIBUTE BY GERALDINE CREEDON PHOTOGRAPHED IN MAY 2023

In 1997 Paul Street Plaza was renamed as Rory Gallagher Place and a memorial sculpture was unveiled. The unique bronze sculpture was created by Cork artist Geraldine Creedon in honour of Rory Gallagher, at the request of Cork Corporation and Rory's family. The bronze sculpture takes the form of a guitar on one side, while the other side consists of intertwined lyrics from Rory's Jinx album.

Rory Gallagher was an Irish blues-rock multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and bandleader. Born in Ballyshannon, County Donegal, and raised in Cork, Gallagher recorded solo albums throughout the 1970s and 1980s, after forming the band Taste during the late 1960s. He was a talented guitarist known for his charismatic performances and dedication to his craft. Gallagher's albums have sold in excess of 30 million copies worldwide.Gallagher received a liver transplant in 1995, but died of complications later that year in London at the age of 47.

SAINT FIN BARRE’S CATHEDRAL IN CORK CITYPHOTOGRAPHED IN MAY 2023

The church grounds are south of the River Lee on Holy Island, on one of the many inlets forming the Great Marsh of Munster (Corcach Mor na Mumhan). Saint Fin Barre's is on the site of at least two previous church buildings, each dedicated to Fin Barre of Cork, patron saint of Cork city and founder of the monastic hermitage at Gougane Barra.

Finbarr was born in about 550. He was, by legend, given Gougane Barra as a place of contemplation, and visited Cork city to lay the foundation stones for the "one true Christian faith".[3] According to tradition, after Finbarr died his remains were brought to Cork to be enclosed in a shrine near the site of today's cathedral.

Archaeological evidence suggests the first site at Fin Barre's probably dates from the 7th century, and consisted of a church and round tower that survived until the 12th century, after which it fell into neglect, or was destroyed during the Norman invasions.

A LARGE MURAL BY CONOR HARRINGTON AT BISHOP LUCEY PARK IN CORK CITY

This attention grabbing and larger than life painting by the Ardu Street Art Project depicts a man setting a table of fruit and veg in the style of an 18th century painting - when the English Market was built. There is a doll's house in the background.

Conor Harrington was born in 1980 in Cork, Ireland. He attended Limerick School of Art and Design and received in 2002 a Bachelor of Fine Arts.

YUAN MING YUAN RESTAURANT 17 PRINCES STREET CORK

Cork City has many excellent restaurants but unfortunately many of them do not open until 5PM or 6PM and that does not suit. Most do not open on Mondays and others are closed on Tuesdays (maybe Monday and Tuesdays). The selection of Chinese restaurants is somewhat limited so by default I usually have lunch at Yuan Ming Yuan as I really like it (especially the staff).

THE MAIN STRUCTURESST FINBARR'S CEMETERY IN CORK MAY 2023

St Finbarr’s Cemetery, which opened in 1868, is the largest cemetery in Ireland outside of Dublin. The keeper’s house (office) is inside the gate to the left. Inside the graveyard there are two small churches (Catholic and Protestant) that were built when the cemetery was first opened and were used for funeral services for a time.

MY ACCOMMODATION FOR A WEEK IN MAY 2023GABRIEL HOUSE SUMMERHILL NORTH

Every time I leave my hotel I take a photograph in order to check that my camera is working ... this ensures that I have installed a battery and a memory card.

CHURCHYARD LANE IN DOUGLAS CORKI USED A SONY FX30

This year, because of the cost of accommodation coupled with the lack of suitable accommodations, my plan to visit and photograph the cities and larger towns in Ireland had to be limited. Because I had booked two years in advance I have managed to spend four days in Cork city and I might visit again in August as I have already booked a room for a week in August.

I am going to provide much information about Douglas over the next few weeks so I will start with demographics.

WOLFE TONE PARK FEATURING TRAM 305 WHICH IS NOW A POPULAR CAFE

Wolfe Tone Park reopened almost a year ago [16 May 2022] following major works by Dublin City Council. It is described as a "green space" but I advise you to visit and decide for yourself but there is no doubt that it is an improvement but I am waiting for the bronze cow to return. Note: It has become much greener since May 2022.

As already mentioned in previous posts the park was closed during the pandemic and the the Parks, Biodiversity and Landscape Services team took the opportunity to restore it to a green space.

WEXFORD STREET AND CAMDEN STREET5 MAY 2023

Camden Street links Ranelagh/Rathmines (Dublin 6) to the southern city centre of Dublin via Wexford Street. It is divided into Camden Street Upper (southern end) and Camden Street Lower (northern end).

A QUICK VISIT TO DUBLIN CASTLE5 MAY 2023

There have been gardens at Dublin Castle since at least the early years of the seventeenth century.

The current gardens are situated immediately south of the Chapel Royal and the State Apartments within an enclosing stone wall. The gardens are entered through wrought-iron gates of Celtic-inspired spirals. Beyond a ‘four seasons’ garden lie four smaller gardens, one at each corner of the site.

LEVEL CROSSING OR RAILWAY CROSSINGSERPENTINE AVENUE

There are more than 100,000 level crossings in Europe and more than 200,000 in North America.

There are currently 909 level crossings on the Irish Rail network, a number which has reduced from over 2,000 since the turn of the century. These are a combination of automated CCTV crossings, manned crossing and unmanned user operated accommodation crossings, including on farmlands.
