A QUICK VISIT TO IVEAGH GARDENS A LITTLE KNOWN PUBLIC PARK JPHOTOGRAPHED IN JUNE 2023 PUBLISHEC 6 JULY 2023

Designed by Ninian Niven in 1865, but with a history dating back over three hundred years, the Iveagh Gardens are located close to St Stephen’s Green Park in Dublin city centre.
From modest beginnings as an earl’s lawn, the gardens went on to host the splendour of the Dublin Exhibition Palace in 1865. Many of the original landscape features are still in place, or have been restored and conserved since 1995. These include the yew maze, the rosarium, and the fountains. The cascade in particular is a stunning spectacle in summer. Iveagh Gardens are popularly known as Dublin’s ‘Secret Garden’.

DUBLINBIKES DOCKING STATION 73AT THE OLD IVEAGH MARKETS BUILDING ON FRANCIS STREET

I visited Francis Street twice within a four period and used two different cameras. One camera was a very old Canon 5D III DSLR which I purchased in an unused a few months ago. Apparently the original owner won it as a prize and had no interest in using it. To be honest, I am impressed by its performance. The Second camera was a Sony FX30 APS-C camera without a mechanical shutter and at the moment it is my go-to camera as it is light an produces acceptable images but it does not have an EVF.

BLACKROCK TRAIN STATION AND NEARBYPHOTOGRAPHED USING A SIGMA DP3 QUATTRO

The Dublin and Kingstown (now Dún Laoghaire) Railway was the first suburban railway in the world. The line began operating in 1834 and was built by William Dargan, an engineer from County Laois.
The idea for the railway arose from proposals by the merchants of Dublin to link the city with Dún Laoghaire Harbour, because the levels of silt at Dublin Port meant that large ships could no longer dock there and instead called at Dún Laoghaire. The line ran from Westland Row (Pearse Street) to Seapoint and shortly after was extended to Dún Laoghaire. Blackrock Station opened on 17 December 1834.

COBH TRAIN STATIONPHOTOGRAPHED MAY 2023

When I arrived in Cobh the weather was beautiful but about twenty minutes later I had to return to the station in order to shelter from an intense thunder storm. I decided to get the next train towards Cork city centre but as the weather had improved I got off the train at Rushbrook but after about twenty minutes more rain arrived.

LUAS TRAM STOP AT BROADSTONE I USED A SIGMA DP1 QUATTRO

In the "Lotus-Eaters" episode of James Joyce's Ulysses Bloom imagines that the couple leaving the Grosvenor Hotel are "Off to the country: Broadstone probably," and in Wandering Rocks Mr. Dudley White stands on Array Quay "undecided whether he should arrive at Phibsborough more quickly by a triple change of tram or by hailing a car or on foot through Smithfield, Constitution hill and Broadstone terminus." Both passages refer to a railway station in the northwest part of inner Dublin, at the top of Constitution Hill between Smithfield and Phibsborough. In 1904 it served as the terminus of the Midland Great Western Railway Company, whose trains went to the west of Ireland.

The central railed-off garden is now a public park.

I GOT A TRAIN FROM BROOMBRIDGE TO MAYNOOTHEASTER WEEKEND APRIL 2023

Years ago I would have avoided this station because it was not safe at any time of the day. The station is unmanned and had been subject to significant and sustained vandalism, enough for Iarnród Éireann to be concerned and questions asked about it in the Dáil.The lack of shelter for passengers or seating facilities was similarly questioned. In 2012, additional security measures were added along with seating and decoration in advance of the station's redesign as part of the Luas Cross City project. Leap card validators, previously not provided due to vandalism concerns, have been installed and Iarnród Éireann ticket machines were installed towards the end of 2019.

MAYNOOTH RAILWAY STATIONA VERY ATTRACTIVE SETTING

The station is situated on the south side of the Royal Canal, opposite Dukes' Harbour. Access to Maynooth is by either the footbridge to the west, which leads to the Main Street of Maynooth; west along the canal walk to residential areas of the town, or via the road bridges to the east, which lead north to the older part of Maynooth, or south to the newer areas.

AT PEARSE STATION WAITING FOR THE DART TO DALKEYEASTER WEEKEND 2023

IT BEGAN TO RAIN AS SOON AS I GOT OFF THE TRAMI THOUGHT THAT SCULPTURE WAS SOME FORM OF CENTRAL VENTILATION OR HEATING INSTALLATION

I was on my way to Tallaght but because the tram was too crowed for my liking and as the journey was proving to be unpleasant I decided to get off at the Drimnagh stop. As I was exiting the tram it began to rain. I then took the opportunity to visit the old Goldenbridge cemetery and the immediate area.

DALKEY TRAIN STATION2 APRIL 2023

Today when I visited my mother, she is 103 next month, she mentioned that there had been a railway accident in Dalkey Station in 1979. Back then I used the service on a basis as I had a business in Bray and travelled twice a day between Bray and Dun Laoghaire and had been unaware of such an event but after a quick online search I found the following account: "The accident happened shortly after 8.30 am in Dalkey in an area known locally as the Khyber Pass because of the steep inclines on either side of the track. The location made rescue attempts difficult. Both trains were carrying around 100 passengers, mainly school-children. 41 people were treated in hospital, including driver Tommy Doyle, the most seriously injured and the last to be rescued. He was trapped in his cab for three hours."

I also discovered that there was a hotel in Dalkey named The Khyber Pass Hotel.

River House was a 5-storey office block on Greek Street - Chancery Street it was described as a "brutalist eyesore" by the Sunday Times. Permission to build River House was granted in 1972, and the building was completed in 1973. It had curtain walling at ground and 1st floor levels, with 4 additional storeys above with pre-cast cladding. The architect of the building has been disputed. Frank McDonald attributed it to John Thompson and Partners, but this led to a libel suit during which it was stated that "neither John or David Thompson of the firm John Thompson and Partners had anything to do with the design or erection of River House". It appears to have been the work of Patrick J. Sheahan and Partners.

TRAIN STATION AND TRAM STOPBROOMBRIDGE 23 OCTOBER 2022

Broombridge is a railway station beside a Luas Tram stop serving Cabra, Dublin 7, Ireland. It lies on the southern bank of the Royal Canal at the western end of what had been Liffey Junction station on the erstwhile Midland Great Western Railway (MGWR). It takes its name from Broome Bridge, which crosses the canal, where William Rowan Hamilton developed the mathematical notion of quaternions. A plaque on the adjacent canal bridge and the name of the Luas Maintenance depot on site, Hamilton Depot, commemorates this.

TRAM DEPARTING CABRA LUAS STOPI USED AN RX0 - OCTOBER 2022

Today, I discovered that a tripod or a gimbal is required if I decide to produce videos.

Cabra Luas stop is located at the northern end of the Broadstone railway cutting, immediately to the north of Connaught Street, which crosses the line on the Liam Whelan bridge, which was rebuilt as part of the construction of the stop. The main entrance is a long ramp leading from the eastern side of the bridge to the middle of the southbound platform (there are also stairs which lead from the middle of the ramp to the end of the platform). A second entrance consists of a pathway leading from the northern end of the stop to the nearby Mount Bernard Park.

The cutting is somewhat wider than the stop itself, meaning that there is some leftover space behind the northbound platform. Saplings have been planted in this area in an attempt to reduce the Luas's carbon footprint. Saplings have also been planted on the southbound platform.

I have decided to devote more time to producing videos and am in the process of acquiring suitable equipment and I have ordered a Sony FX30 camera with the option of switching to the new Sony A7RV which is expected at the end of October 2022. However, as the A7RV is much more expensive and is a hybrid rather than a dedicated video camera I very much suspect that I will not get the A7RV.

I have, for many years, an RX0 camera which as small as a matchbox and while I like it the user interface is almost impossible to use and despite its size a tripod is required but there is no way that I am willing to carry a tripod in order to use the camera. Anyway, having noticed that reviewers of the new Sony Sony ZV-1F camera were all using Sony grips I decided to have a look at the Sony GP-VPT2BT [supplied free if you order the new Sony ZV-1F Vlogging camera costing Euro 649.00].

I managed to borrow the grip for a few hours to see how well it works with the RX0. Unfortunately, the grip does not communicate with my version of the RX0 but the GP-VPT2BT worked very well as a mini tripod so I decided to purchase it. I should mention that I decided that I needed it as I have ordered the new Sony FX-30 Video-Centric camera which does communicated with the GP-VPT2BT.

FATIMA LUAS STOPJAMES WALK RIALTO

Back in the 1970s and 1980s when I worked nearby Fatima Mansions was an area that I avoided at all costs and old habits die hard so I am still inclined to avoid the area. However, I am not sure how it happened but I arrived at the Fatima Tram Stop.

Fatima Mansions is an extensive public housing complex located in Rialto, Dublin. In the early 21st century, it underwent a substantial urban renewal programme with the assistance of public and private funding. All existing apartment blocks were demolished to make way for 600 accommodation units, consisting of social, affordable and private housing along with community, business and leisure facilities at a cost of €200 million. The blocks have since been renamed Herberton Apartments, but the area is still referred to locally as Fatima, which is the name of the adjacent Luas Red Line tram stop.

Work on the original complex started before World War II under the direction of Dublin Corporation (now Dublin City Council) but construction was held up due to material shortages. The first phase of construction was finally completed after the war and the first tenants began to move in in 1947: the development consisted of fifteen blocks, each of four floors in height. They replaced tenement housing for the area's working-class residents, and provided a great improvement in living conditions. In the mid 1980s the area became notorious for its high levels of heroin use and drug dealing, which eventually led to the original complex's demolition due to the drug problem's severity.
