ADDED CORK CITY AND COUNTY PHOTO BLOG

Cork is the second largest city in Ireland and third largest city by population on the island of Ireland. It is located in the Southern Region and in the province of Munster. In the 2022 census, the first following an extension to the city's boundary in 2019, the city had a population of 222,333.[3]

The city centre is an island positioned between two channels of the River Lee which meet downstream at the eastern end of the city centre, where the quays and docks along the river lead outwards towards Lough Mahon and Cork Harbour, one of the largest natural harbours in the world.

Originally a monastic settlement, Cork was expanded by Viking invaders around 915. Its charter was granted by Prince John in 1185. Cork city was once fully walled, and the remnants of the old medieval town centre can be found around South and North Main streets. The city's cognomen of "the rebel city" originates in its support for the Yorkist cause in the Wars of the Roses. Corkonians sometimes refer to the city as "the real capital", a reference to its opposition to the Anglo-Irish Treaty in the Irish Civil War.

IT BEGAN TO RAIN AS SOON AS I GOT OFF THE TRAMI THOUGHT THAT SCULPTURE WAS SOME FORM OF CENTRAL VENTILATION OR HEATING INSTALLATION

I was on my way to Tallaght but because the tram was too crowed for my liking and as the journey was proving to be unpleasant I decided to get off at the Drimnagh stop. As I was exiting the tram it began to rain. I then took the opportunity to visit the old Goldenbridge cemetery and the immediate area.

THIS IS EMBARRASSING I THOUGHT THAT SCULPTURE WAS SOME FORM OF CENTRAL VENTILATION OR HEATING INSTALLATION

Eileen MacDonagh was born in Sligo and has worked as a sculptor since the early 1980s. Her work has featured in many exhibitions, both in Ireland and abroad, including shows in Portugal, Scotland, India and Japan. Eileen has both organised and participated in many International symposia; her work is included in numerous collections, such as the OPW, Kilkenny and Cork County Councils, Marlay Park, Dublin and Tawara Newtown, Osaka, Japan.

WHERE THE FAIRIES LIVESEAN WALSH PUBLIC PARK IN TALLAGHT

While I was photographing these fairy homes a young girl arrived and started kicking one of the little doors so it was somewhat obvious that she did not fear the wrath of the fairy-folk and that could be a bad mistake as Irish fairies are not at all pleasant.

PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE ACROSS THE GRAND CANALAT THE DRIMNAGH LUAS TRAM STOP

Drimnagh was farmland until the mid-1930s, when some of the first tenement clearances brought city centre residents from one-room hovels to terraced and semi-detached houses in a series of roads named after the mountain ranges of Ireland. The suburb consists of one area close to Drimnagh Castle and Lansdowne Valley, with three-bedroom private housing built by Associated Properties, and another area (the larger part) built by Dublin Corporation and consisting of three-bedroom 'Kitchen Houses' and two-bedroom 'Parlour Houses' bordering the Grand Canal and Crumlin. The two areas meet at the parish church, the Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel, in the centre of Drimnagh, built in 1943.

WHAT HAD BEEN DUMPED INTO THE GRAND CANALAT THE DRIMNAGH TRAM STOP

There are volunteer groups who clean up sections of the canals in Dublin on a regular basis and what you see in my photographs is typical of what is dumped into the waters of the canals.

One of two public parks created on disused cemeteries in the Shandon area is known as the Dr Mary Hearn Park. Back in the late 1960s I heard some of my teachers, who lived in the area, describe Burlington Road as being "leafy" since then many of the grand houses have been replaced by generations of office blocks mainly because the older buildings occupied sites that were worth more than the occupying buildings were.

OSCAR WILDE ON A ROCK AND BY DANNY OSBORNE18 MARCH 2023

Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde (October 16, 1854 – November 30, 1900) was an Irish playwright, novelist, poet, and short story writer. Known for his barbed wit, he was one of the most successful playwrights of late Victorian London, and one of the greatest celebrities of his day. As the result of a famous trial, he suffered a dramatic downfall and was imprisoned for two years of hard labour after being convicted of the offence of "gross indecency". The scholar H. Montgomery Hyde suggests this term implies homosexual acts not amounting to buggery in British legislation of the time.

A LOVELY DAY FOR A GUINNESSST PATRICK'S DAY 2023

When Guinness is poured, the gas bubbles appear to travel downwards in the glass. The effect is attributed to drag; bubbles that touch the walls of a glass are slowed in their travel upwards. Bubbles in the centre of the glass are, however, free to rise to the surface, and thus form a rising column of bubbles. The rising bubbles create a current by the entrainment of the surrounding fluid. As beer rises in the centre, the beer near the outside of the glass falls. This downward flow pushes the bubbles near the glass towards the bottom. Although the effect occurs in any liquid, it is particularly noticeable in any dark nitrogen stout, as the drink combines dark-coloured liquid and light-coloured bubbles.

KING BILLY'S WHITE HORSE

The myth is that William, who was dressed in gleaming armour, was riding a white horse while his banner bore the words 'God and the Protestant religion'. According to historic records the horse that featured in the Battle Of The Boyne was brown.

When I was young I remember my Grandmother saying as we passed a large house "protestants live in that house" when I asked her how she knew she replied that they have King Billy's horse above the door. I was a bit surprised by Grandmothers's comment as her sister happened to be a Protestant.

WHY ARE THE DOORS SO TALL AND NARROWARBOUR HILL DUBLIN 7

Arbour Hill is derived from the Irish Cnoc an Arbhair which means "corn hill". The area was owned by Christ Church Cathedral during the medieval period and was used to store corn. The area first appears on a map in 1603 as "Earber-hill".

As part of his commissioned symphonic work "Irishmen and Irishwomen", the composer Vincent Kennedy included a movement titled "Arbour Hill". This movement is a tribute to the Easter Rising participants buried at Arbour Hill.
