TAIT’S CLOCK AT BAKER PLACE IN LIMERICK

Tait’s Clock is a prominent landmark in Limerick City, Ireland. It was constructed in 1866 to honour a Limerick entrepreneur, Sir Peter Tait, who began the Tait’s Clothing Factory in Limerick during the 1850s.

When I visited Limerick in 2015 I had fully switched to Mirrorless from DSLR and my main camera was the Sony NEX-7 which I had purchased in 2012 and by the end of 2015 I had switched to the A7RII. Today (27 July 2023) my main camera is the Sony NA7RIV as I decided that it was not worth the that it did not really make sense to upgrade to the A7RV. Hower, I recently obtained a Sony FX-30 which is what I intend to use when I visit Limerick in September.

There was once a famous night club (music venue) known as Baker Place but I believe that it closed in 2011. Back in 2015 I stayed in Pery’s Hotel and could see the clock from my hotel room.

The Sony α NEX-5 is a digital camera launched on 11 May 2010. It is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera with the body size of a larger model fairly compact point-and-shoot camera with a larger sensor size (APS-C) comparable to that of some digital single-lens reflex cameras. Its major competitors in the market are the cameras based on the micro 4/3 standard created by Panasonic and Olympus, and a few low end Canon, Nikon, and even Sony α DSLRs. The NEX-5 shoots 14.2 megapixel stills and has a 7 frame/s continuous shotmode. It has the capability to shoot 1920×1080i at 60 frame/s in AVCHD or 1440×1080p at 30 frame/s in MPEG4. The NEX-5 was replaced by the 16 megapixel NEX-5N in August 2011.

THE RIVER DODDER AND PACKHORSE BRIDGE

This series features images of the area between the Nine Arches an the small footbridge connecting Milltown Road and Bankside Cottages.

It took me more than a year to find the name of this bridge but a few years ago a local told me that it was the oldest bridge in Dublin but he could not remember its name but it had something to do with horses. The bridge is Packhorse Bridge.

A packhorse bridge is a bridge intended to carry packhorses (horses loaded with sidebags or panniers) across a river or stream. Typically a packhorse bridge consists of one or more narrow (one horse wide) masonry arches, and has low parapets so as not to interfere with the panniers borne by the horses. Multi-arched examples sometimes have triangular cutwaters that are extended upward to form pedestrian refuges.

Packhorse bridges were often built on the trade routes (often called packhorse routes) that formed major transport arteries across Europe and Great Britain until the coming of the turnpike roads and canals in the 18th century. Before the road-building efforts of Napoleon, all crossings of the Alps were on packhorse trails. Travellers’ carriages were dismantled and transported over the mountain passes by ponies and mule trains.
