PUBLISHED SEPTEMBER 2023

For practical and work flow reasons I had to change my approach. From now on the monthly diaries will include photographs published in a specific month rather than the month of capture.

SEPTEMBER UPDATES

SCULPTURE IN CONTEXT IS THE MAJOR EVENT THIS MONTH

Sculpture in Context is the largest sculpture exhibition in Ireland. It is an annual event organised by Sculpture in Context, an artist-led organisation, in association with the Office of Public Works and the National Botanic Gardens. The exhibition showcases the work of over 120 artists using a wide range of media, from the smallest, most intricate ceramic works to stone sculptures of monumental scale. The sculptures are displayed throughout the 50 acres of beautifully-landscaped grounds of the National Botanic Gardens, creating a unique and inspiring experience for visitors.

The 2023 exhibition will run from September 7 to October 13. The opening hours are from 10am to 6pm, seven days a week. Admission is free.

I CANCELLED MY VISIT TO LIMERICK

Unfortunately I will not be visiting the city of Limerick this year. I was scheduled to spend a week in September but I decided that I could not justify the cost.

INTERESTING BUILDING

IRISH METEOROLOGICAL OFFICE BUILDING

The Irish Meteorological Office in Glasnevin was built in 1979 to designs by celebrated Irish architect Liam McCormick (1916-1996), who is best known for his ecclesiastical buildings in north-western Ireland. It is a striking building in the form of a truncated pyramid, characteristically designed by McCormick to respond to the particular requirements of the client.

ON WASHERWOMAN HILL

Anna & Isobel Mahon

It is claimed that the original Washerwoman's Hill dates back to at least the 1770's when the female occupants of an Alms House on Glasnevin Hill operated a 'laundry' service. Clothes and bed linen were washed for the public in the waters of the Nevin stream.

POLICING ON HORSEBACK

THE MINISTER RESPONSIBLE PROMISED ADDITIONAL POLICING

Policing on horseback is ideal for high-visibility crime prevention. Mounted Gardaí sit several feet above the height of a crowd with the result that they have a good vantage point and can be easily recognised by members of the public. The Mounted Unit was established in 1998 and is based in the Phoenix Park. The unit’s facilities include stables, tack rooms, stores, paddocks and an all-weather training arena. The Unit provides support to Garda Districts in many counties on a regular basis.

ST ANNE'S PARK

PHOTOGRAPHED IN AUGUST BUT PUBLISHED IN SEPTEMBER

One of the most distinctive characteristics of St Anne's park are the avenues of fine trees, which originally framed the main house. Notably the long and wide East/West Avenue is planted with Holm oaks (Quercus ilex), Monterey pines (Pinus radiata) and Austrian Pines (Pinus nigra). There are several other avenues framed with yews (Taxus baccata), horse chestnuts (Aesculus hippocatanum), Holm oaks or Monterey pines. Another feature of St. Anne’s Park is the extensive planting of holm oak. This species, resistant to sea wind, was selected by the Guinness family to act as a shelter belt along its coastal boundary and along the boundary of the park. It was also Lord Ardilaun’s favourite tree.

IT IS LONELY HERE

WAITING FOR YOU TO VISIT

This particular site in in many ways experimental and gives me the opportunity to try out different ideas and technologies and at present my main focus is on building and operating a really fast site and that is much more complicated [and costly] that I had originally expected. "South Of The Liffey" is a super fast but very basic PhotoBlog produced by SparkleApp.

NORTH OF THE RIVER

PHOTOGRAPHED BY WILLIAM MURPHY

The Northside of Dublin City is the part of the city that lies north of the River Liffey. It is an informal but commonly used term. While it is sometimes regarded as less wealthy than the city's Southside, the Northside was originally the home of the city's upper classes and the more privileged of the two. Today, some of the wealthiest areas in Ireland lie north of the river, such as Malahide, Howth, Clontarf, and Castleknock.
