ARBOUR HILL DUBLIN

Arbour Hill is an area of Dublin within the inner city on the Northside of the River Liffey, in the Dublin 7 postal district. Arbour Hill, the road of the same name, runs west from Blackhall Place in Stoneybatter, and separates Collins Barracks, now hosting part of the National Museum of Ireland, to the south from Arbour Hill Prison to the north, whose graveyard includes the burial plot of the signatories of the Easter Proclamation that began the 1916 Rising. St Bricin’s Military Hospital, formerly the King George V Hospital, is also located in Arbour Hill.

Arbour Hill is derived from the Irish Cnoc an Arbhair which means “corn hill”. The area was owned by Christ Church Cathedral during the medieval period and was used to store corn. The area first appears on a map in 1603 as “Earber-hill”.

As part of his commissioned symphonic work “Irishmen and Irishwomen”, the composer Vincent Kennedy included a movement titled “Arbour Hill”. This movement is a tribute to the Easter Rising participants buried at Arbour Hill.

THERE WAS SOME SNOW TO BE SEEN BUT NOT MUCH

Today I used my new Sony F30 and as it does not have an electronic viewfinder I find it somewhat difficult to use also the the images are inclined to be underexposed and tend towards exaggerated blues. Of course some the problems are due to my lack of experience.

Technological University Dublin or TU Dublin is Ireland’s first technological university, established on 1 January 2019, and with a history stretching back to 1887 through the amalgamated Dublin Institute of Technology which progressed from the first technical education institution in Ireland, the City of Dublin Technical Schools. It is the second-largest third-level institution in Ireland, with a student population of 28,500.

The university was formed by the amalgamation of three existing institutes of technology in the Dublin area – Dublin Institute of Technology, Institute of Technology, Blanchardstown, and Institute of Technology, Tallaght, taking over all functions and operations of these institutions. It is the eighth university in Ireland, and the fourth in County Dublin. The university asserts an entrepreneurial ethos and industry-focused approach, with extensive collaboration with industry for research and teaching. The flagship campus is located within Grangegorman, Dublin, with two other long-term campuses, in Tallaght and Blanchardstown, and remaining legacy sites at Bolton Street and Aungier Street.

TU Dublin has approximately 3,500 staff.

NEW BARBERS AND STREETWEAR IN STONEYBATTER

Prussia Street is named in the late 18th century after Frederick II, King of Prussia. Prior to this is had been called Cabaragh Lane, Nearby Manor Street derives its name from medieval Grangorman Manor. The name Stoneybatter, derived from ‘Bothar na gloch’ (road of stones) dates from at least 1603 (ibid, 128). The road follows an ancient route from Wicklow to Tara which crossed the Liffey at the ford of the hurdles.

PHOTOGRAPHING BELFIELD UNIVERSITY CAMPUS

SONY FX30 CAMERA

My 2023 programme year began today with a visit to the UCD college campus in Belfield. I used my new Sony FX30 camera and that is what I intend to use when I visit Kilkenny in a few weeks, Belfast in April, Cork in May, Galway in May and Cork for a second week in August.

Unfortunately the programme is limited, compared to previous years, as I am unwilling to pay the asking prices for hotel rooms in Limerick and Waterford.

Belfield is a small enclave, not quite a suburb, in Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown, Ireland. It is synonymous with the main campus of University College Dublin.

Belfield is close to Donnybrook, Ballsbridge, Clonskeagh, Goatstown and Stillorgan and takes its name from Belfield House and Demesne, one of eight properties bought to form the main campus of University College Dublin. It is adjacent to the R138 road.

UCD originates in a body founded in 1854, which opened as the Catholic University of Ireland on the feast of St. Malachy with John Henry Newman as its first rector; it re-formed in 1880 and chartered in its own right in 1908. The Universities Act, 1997 renamed the constituent university as the “National University of Ireland, Dublin”, and a ministerial order of 1998 renamed the institution as “University College Dublin – National University of Ireland, Dublin”.

Originally located at St Stephen’s Green in the Dublin city centre, all faculties have since relocated to a 133-hectare (330-acre) campus at Belfield, six kilometres to the south of the city centre. In 1991, it purchased a second site in Blackrock. This currently houses the Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School.
