THE HUNGRY TREEIS A FAVOURITE OF MINE

Last week I published photographs of Paint-A-Box street art that featured this park bench but when I went to the park to photograph the actual bench there was a person sitting on the bench, I returned later and the same person was sitting still sitting on the bench ... I said hello to check that they were OK. Only, once before have I seen anyone sit on the bench.

STAY SAFE THIS HALLOWEENOCTOBER 2022

For the last three month I have heard fireworks almost every night but for the last few days it had been quite, very quite ... the calm before the storm? Yesterday I saw a large number number of wooden pallets being removed by Dublin City Council.

I am still testing my new Sony FX30 and today I recorded some video footage. I used a Sony FE 20MM F1.8 lens and I think that it performed better than my much liked Zeiss Batis 25mm lens.
One thing that I needed to confirm that I could use my iPhone to Geo-Tag the images and I was pleased to discover that were no issues.

THE NEW SONY A7RV WAS LAUNCHED TODAYBUT I WENT WITH THE FX-30 INSTEAD AND IT ARRIVED TODAY

Today the new Sony A7RV was launched (Euro 4500) but I had already decided to go down a different path and purchase the Sony FX-30 which is a video-centric camera but unlike the A7RV it is not a full-frame camera and it does not have an Electronic View Finder. I must admit that I am a bit disappointed by the price of the A7RV.

The FX-30 arrived today but I discovered a problem in that Lightroom or Capture One could not process the RAW files, I have yet to use it as a video camera so cannot pass any comments.

It should be mentioned that ON1 and Luminar Neo both import the RAW files.

One thing that I needed to confirm that I could use my iPhone to Geo-Tag the images and I was pleased to discover that were no issues.

I have lived on Bolton Street for more than thirty years and as long as I can remember this horrible phone kiosk has been here until it was removed to be replaced by something that was better but not much better. I do not ever remember seeing anyone actually use the kiosk to make a phone call but some locals found alternative uses that I never investigate. A long time ago, after locking myself out off my apartment, I did try to use the phone but discovered that there was no handset.

TRAIN STATION AND TRAM STOPBROOMBRIDGE 23 OCTOBER 2022

Broombridge is a railway station beside a Luas Tram stop serving Cabra, Dublin 7, Ireland. It lies on the southern bank of the Royal Canal at the western end of what had been Liffey Junction station on the erstwhile Midland Great Western Railway (MGWR). It takes its name from Broome Bridge, which crosses the canal, where William Rowan Hamilton developed the mathematical notion of quaternions. A plaque on the adjacent canal bridge and the name of the Luas Maintenance depot on site, Hamilton Depot, commemorates this.

BROOM BRIDGE - THE ACTUAL BRIDGEBROOMBRIDGE 23 OCTOBER 2022

Broom Bridge also called Broome Bridge, and sometimes Brougham Bridge, is a bridge along Broombridge Road which crosses the Royal Canal in Cabra, Dublin, Ireland. Broome Bridge is named after William Broome, one of the directors of the Royal Canal company who lived nearby.

It is famous for being the location where Sir William Rowan Hamilton first wrote down the fundamental formula for quaternions on 16 October 1843, which is to this day commemorated by a stone plaque on the northwest corner of the underside of the bridge. After being spoiled by the action of vandals and some visitors, the plaque was moved to a different place, higher, under the railing of the bridge.

Given the historical importance of the bridge with respect to mathematics, mathematicians from all over the world have been known to take part in the annual commemorative walk from Dunsink Observatory to the site. Attendees have included Nobel Prize winners Murray Gell-Mann, Steven Weinberg and Frank Wilczek, and mathematicians Sir Andrew Wiles, Sir Roger Penrose and Ingrid Daubechies. The 16 October is sometimes referred to as Broomsday (in reference to Broome Bridge) and as a nod to the literary commemorations on 16 June (Bloomsday in honour of James Joyce).

ADAM AND EVE'S IS NAMED AFTER A PUB STATUE OF MOTHER AND CHILD AND THE STATIONS OF THE CROSS

I am not sure if there is public access to this area of the church grounds ... I photographed through the railings on Cook Street.

The church's site by the River Liffey gave the famous opening lines of Finnegans Wake (1939): riverrun, past Eve and Adam’s, from swerve of shore to bend of bay, brings us by a commodius vicus of recirculation back to Howth Castle and Environs.

The Church of the Immaculate Conception, also known as Adam and Eve's, is a Roman Catholic church run by the Franciscans and it is located on Merchants Quay, Dublin.

During the Dissolution reign of King Henry VIII around 1540 the Friary at Francis Street, the site of the current church of St. Nicholas of Myra (Without), Francis Street, was confiscated and the community was dispersed. In 1615 a new friary was built on Cook Street. A chapel on the site was destroyed in 1619 and later rebuilt. The Franciscans secretly said Mass in the Adam and Eve Tavern, where the popular name of the present church comes from. In 1759 a newer church was built, which was later replaced by the current church.

After the Catholic Emancipation in 1829, they set about building a church and laid the foundation stone of the current church in 1834. The original design was by the architect Patrick Byrne who planned a tower on the Merchant's Quay entrance. However due to financial problems the church was built without a nave or tower.

The church was originally dedicated to Saint Francis but in 1889 it was rededicated to the Immaculate Conception of Our Lady.

After 1900, the church was reorganised with the moving of the altar to the left wall and the original sanctuary was changed into a transept and entrance from Cook Street. A small nave was added to the right and a dome built over the sanctuary.

In 1912 a shrine to Saint Anthony was built in 1912 to designs by the architects Doolin, Butler and Donnelly.

In 1926 to celebrate the seventh centenary of Saint Francis, the friars built a circular apse, remodelled the transepts and extended the nave with an entrance to Skippers Alley. The consecration of the high altar took place on 21 September 1928 by Dr. Paschal Robinson, titular Archbishop of Tyana (1870-1948).

CLADDAGH DOLL PAINT-A-BOX STREET ART BY STEPHEN DOYLE

This Paint-A-Box street art had been at this location since 2017 but I was unable to discover the name of the artist until today [17 October 2022].

Stephen describes himself as an illustrator based in Dublin, heavily inspired by tattoo artistry as well as all things retro and Irish. He describes this example of street art as follows: This is my Claddagh or Irish nesting doll design inspired by traditional Russian Matryoshka nesting dolls. But this doll is quintessentially Irish with her wavy red curls, shamrocks and Claddagh.

I photographed this on Bridgefoot Street in Dublin.

MOVO MTP-10 TIMELAPSE PANNING BASE I MAY ACTUALLY HAVE THE MTP-11

Recently I needed to rotate a small camera and fortunately I remembered that I had purchased this device a few years ago. I read online that an adapter is needed to charge this unit but as I was able to charge it with a USB cable I suspect that I have the more recent version.

The Movo Photo MTP-11 Motorised Panoramic Time Lapse Tripod Head attaches between a slider/tripod and camera and enables you to create professional time lapses on a budget. On board controls allow you to select pan rotation angle (15°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 90°, 180° & 360°) speed (5, 15, 30 or 60 minute rotations) and direction (clockwise and counter-clockwise). Includes a high quality motor to smoothly operate in horizontal and vertical orientations at adjustable speeds. The MTP-11 has a 6 hour rechargeable battery which charges up with included USB charging cable. The head supports payloads up to 4.4 lb (2kg). The mounting points are a 1/4" tripod mount thread underneath and a 1/4" camera mount stud above.

TRAM DEPARTING CABRA LUAS STOPI USED AN RX0 - OCTOBER 2022

Today, I discovered that a tripod or a gimbal is required if I decide to produce videos.

Cabra Luas stop is located at the northern end of the Broadstone railway cutting, immediately to the north of Connaught Street, which crosses the line on the Liam Whelan bridge, which was rebuilt as part of the construction of the stop. The main entrance is a long ramp leading from the eastern side of the bridge to the middle of the southbound platform (there are also stairs which lead from the middle of the ramp to the end of the platform). A second entrance consists of a pathway leading from the northern end of the stop to the nearby Mount Bernard Park.

The cutting is somewhat wider than the stop itself, meaning that there is some leftover space behind the northbound platform. Saplings have been planted in this area in an attempt to reduce the Luas's carbon footprint. Saplings have also been planted on the southbound platform.

I have decided to devote more time to producing videos and am in the process of acquiring suitable equipment and I have ordered a Sony FX30 camera with the option of switching to the new Sony A7RV which is expected at the end of October 2022. However, as the A7RV is much more expensive and is a hybrid rather than a dedicated video camera I very much suspect that I will not get the A7RV.

I have, for many years, an RX0 camera which as small as a matchbox and while I like it the user interface is almost impossible to use and despite its size a tripod is required but there is no way that I am willing to carry a tripod in order to use the camera. Anyway, having noticed that reviewers of the new Sony Sony ZV-1F camera were all using Sony grips I decided to have a look at the Sony GP-VPT2BT [supplied free if you order the new Sony ZV-1F Vlogging camera costing Euro 649.00].

I managed to borrow the grip for a few hours to see how well it works with the RX0. Unfortunately, the grip does not communicate with my version of the RX0 but the GP-VPT2BT worked very well as a mini tripod so I decided to purchase it. I should mention that I decided that I needed it as I have ordered the new Sony FX-30 Video-Centric camera which does communicated with the GP-VPT2BT.

ANOTHER VISIT TO CHANCERY STREET PLUS THE STREETS OFF IT

Back in the early 1900s Dublin City slums were the worst in the United Kingdom and many of the tenements were off Chancery Street. Fortunately, things have changed since then. Today, the area is much better and is very well served by the LUAS tram service which I use daily.

At the moment [October 2022] I am in the process or re-evaluating all my camera equipment.

I cannot remember but I think that I purchased my Sony DSC-HX90V late in 2015 or early in 2016. I got a huge discount as some one returned it to my local dealer a week after the purchased it.

Unfortunately while I did take a number of photographs this was the only one that was useable as the low light performance of my camera is not the best.

A shape-shifting flock of thousands of starlings, called a murmuration, is amazing to see.

Ireland hosts hundreds of thousands of Starlings from numerous countries all over northern Europe each winter, and every evening they group together and perform mesmerising murmurations before settling down to roost together for the night. Wherever you are in Ireland, keep an eye on the sky from around an hour before sunset and you'll likely see groups of Starlings all flying in the same direction - to a local lake to roost in the reedbeds on the lake fringes, or maybe to an area of forestry to roost in the trees.

I cannot decide if Shandon Gardens is in Cabra or Phibsborough so, a year ago, I asked a few locals and I got different answers. For more leisurely pursuits are Mt Bernard Park is on your doorstep, the Royal Canal Walk, the Botanic Gardens and the Phoenix Park. I have photographed the hungry tree many times over the last fifteen years but I only noticed this paint-a-box street art a few days ago.

The Hungry Tree in Dublin, near my apartment, is an eighty year old London Plane tree that appears to be in the process of devouring a cast iron bench. As the years have passed, the tree has grown, causing it to swallow the parts of the park bench that stands in its way. Its bark now spills over the back of the bench, making it appear as though the seat is being sucked into the tree’s mouth-like trunk.

Today I used a 12 year old Sony camcorder, the VG10E, combined with a Sony GM 70-200mm lens hoping the capture what the streets feel like on a typical Sunday at about lunch time. Most of the restaurants were open or in the process of opening.

The street affords a vista all the way from the junction with Bolton Street south through Parliament Street to Dublin's City Hall. Capel Street is notable for the remains of some "Dutch Billy" houses dating from the 18th century.
