TEDDY'S ICE CREAMS

TEDDY'S THE HOME OF THE 99

TEDDY'S IN DUN LAOGHAIRE [THE HOME OF THE 99]

A 99 Flake ice cream, or more commonly a 99 or ninety-nine ,is an ice cream cone, usually made with soft serve ice cream, into which a Flake bar has been inserted. The ice cream is usually vanilla flavoured. They are sold by ice cream vans and parlours.

Some one once explained to me that ice creams with flake chocolate were called 99s because they originally cost 99 pence and as you may have guessed that it untrue. Back in 1930 there were 240 pence in a Pound and and no one would have shown a price as 99 Pence. Also 99 pence would have been a huge price to pay for a meal let alone an ice cream.

In the days of monarchy in Italy a King's eliteguard consisted of 99 men so as far as the general public were concerned anything really special or first class was known as "99". Before the Second World war the ice cream business was totally dominated by Italians so when Cadbury introduced their small flake for ice creams they needed to appeal to the Italian business community so they marketed their "superb Flake" as the "99".
