ORIGINAL ENTRANCE TO DUN LAOGHAIRE TRAIN STATION

THE ORIGINAL ENTRANCE TO DUN LAOGHAIRE TRAIN STATION [DESIGNED BY JOHN SKIPTON MULVANY]

This was the original entrance to Dun Laoghaire railway station.

The original station building was replaced in 1854 by a new structure in a neo-classical style, designed by John Skipton Mulvany, and it was the active station building until 1971, when the current arrangement was introduced.

Mulvany's building is now Hartley's restaurant which opened in 2007 there was another restaurant there but I cannot remember the name..

A replacement station entrance, with combined ticket office and automated barriers, was built above the railway lines at street level in 1998, it was constructed with a steel framework supporting a taut sail-like canopy and with glazed panels as side features.

I have used this station on a regular basis for about fifty years and was totally unaware (until a few years ago when new signs were installed) that its official name was Mallin Station. Apparently it has been named Mallin Station since 1966, after Michael Mallin.
