This attractive little park is well worth a visit but it up until recently I was more than annoyed by the fact that the gates were only open for two hours every weekday up until a few years ago. To the best of my knowledge it is now open to the public from 8am to 4pm every day. Officially, the hours are limited because of anti-social activity in the immediate area.
The neighbourhood of Chancery Park has a very colourful history. According to some historic accounts it was known as “the Pill”, an ancient name that was related to a Viking term for “penis”. Up until 1798, Pill Lane, where Chancery Street now stands, was considered a hotbed of sedition. It was such a source of revolutionary pamphlets that the authorities spoke of the “Marats of Pill Lane”, a reference to the French radical journalist assassinated in his bath.
