In previous posts I used the spelling Browne rather than Brown and at this stage I am not sure if there are/were two different spellings. Going forward I will use Brown.

A path leads down from the cluster of terraced homes perched high above Mount Brown, and passes through a wrought iron archway leading out onto the main road, a well-used connection between Thomas Street and Kilmainham.

This street is located near St. James’ Hospital. It is now named after Eamonn Ceannt who was one of the volunteers who occupied the local workhouse which was associated with the South Dublin Union.

The South Dublin Union which was 50 acre site where St James Hospital now stands.

In 1916 the South Dublin Union was a complex of workhouses and hospitals for the ‘destitute, infirmed and insane’ and had over three thousand inmates. Back then the vast majority of Dublin’s working class could expect to end their days destitute so it was a vital public service.

BUT I WAS ON MY WAY TO MALAHIDE

The sunlight was really intense.

I was on my way to Malahide by train but as the train had problems and was delayed at Clontarf Road Station I decided to forget about visiting Malahide as the sun was about to set.

Clontarf Road railway station is a railway station in Dublin, Ireland, on the DART commuter rail line.

It is located at the south-western end of Clontarf Road on Dublin’s Northside, on the border between Clontarf and Fairview, and serves people living and working in those areas, as well as Marino and East Wall. The station is situated just north of Fairview DART depot. It was built to serve the densely populated areas about, and also East Point Business Park and was opened on 1 September 1997. The station has a car park and is served by a shuttle to the East Point Business Park; it is also the terminus of the 104 bus operated by Go-Ahead Ireland (formerly by Dublin Bus, which runs hourly to DCU via Beaumont Hospital)

The area was last served by the old Clontarf Station, almost a half a mile (nearly 1 kilometre) north on the line. The remnants of that station can still be seen at the rail bridge over Howth Road, halfway between the start of that road and Killester village centre. This original Clontarf station was opened on 25 May 1844 and finally closed on 3 September 1956.
