SITE WIDE ENERGY PLANT AT GRANGEGORMAN UNIVERSITY CAMPUS

PHOTOGRAPHED 10 MARCH 2023

The development of the Grangegorman Quarter is based on the international best practices of environmental sustainability. Early, sustainable masterplanning decisions will be augmented by the requisite governmental requirements and best practices and decisions of the designers of the individual buildings.

The basis of the initial energy plan is subdivided into two components: a site wide energy plant as well as an individual renewable energy plant for each building block. All heating, and a portion of the electricity, will be generated from a centralised combined heat and power (CHP) plant using biofuels and distributed to individual buildings. In addition, each of the individual buildings will provide hot water from hot water solar collectors located on the roofs of each building.

PRUSSIA STREET END OF STONEYBATTER

I purchased a Sony FX30 camera late in 2022 and have not had much chance to use it until now. At the moment the images that I am getting appear to be underexposed and blue is somewhat exaggerated.

PHOTOGRAPHING BELFIELD UNIVERSITY CAMPUS

SONY FX30 CAMERA

My 2023 programme year began today with a visit to the UCD college campus in Belfield. I used my new Sony FX30 camera and that is what I intend to use when I visit Kilkenny in a few weeks, Belfast in April, Cork in May, Galway in May and Cork for a second week in August.

Unfortunately the programme is limited, compared to previous years, as I am unwilling to pay the asking prices for hotel rooms in Limerick and Waterford.

Belfield is a small enclave, not quite a suburb, in Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown, Ireland. It is synonymous with the main campus of University College Dublin.

Belfield is close to Donnybrook, Ballsbridge, Clonskeagh, Goatstown and Stillorgan and takes its name from Belfield House and Demesne, one of eight properties bought to form the main campus of University College Dublin. It is adjacent to the R138 road.

UCD originates in a body founded in 1854, which opened as the Catholic University of Ireland on the feast of St. Malachy with John Henry Newman as its first rector; it re-formed in 1880 and chartered in its own right in 1908. The Universities Act, 1997 renamed the constituent university as the “National University of Ireland, Dublin”, and a ministerial order of 1998 renamed the institution as “University College Dublin – National University of Ireland, Dublin”.

Originally located at St Stephen’s Green in the Dublin city centre, all faculties have since relocated to a 133-hectare (330-acre) campus at Belfield, six kilometres to the south of the city centre. In 1991, it purchased a second site in Blackrock. This currently houses the Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School.

SMITHFIELD PLAZA 18 FEBRUARY 2023

ALSO KNOWN AS SMITHFIELD SQUARE OR SMITHFIELD MARKET

Yesterday I visited the Clock Bar on Thomas Street as it was the end of an era as it would not be opening again on Monday as the building had been sold for redevelopment. On my way hope I passed through Smithfield Square which I do not normally visit at night and as it was dark my iPhone camera did not work well as many of the images had excessive motion blur.

Smithfield is an area on the Northside of Dublin. Its focal point is a public square, formerly an open market and common, now officially called Smithfield Plaza, but known locally as Smithfield Square or Smithfield Market. Historically, Smithfield formed the western part of Oxmantown and lay close to Oxmantown Green.

The area known as Smithfield roughly incorporates the area bounded by the River Liffey to the south, Bow Street to the east, Queen Street to the west, and North Brunswick street in the suburb of Grangegorman to the north.

Notable landmarks include the Old Jameson Whiskey Distillery and the Observation Tower.

Recent commercial, residential and cultural developments led to the area becoming newly fashionable in the first decade of the 21st century. However, most notably in the period 2008 to 2010, stagnation set in as developments stalled and the Irish economy/property market nose-dived once the post-Celtic Tiger economic recession struck. The significant issues of variable apartment occupancy rates, coupled with closed retail spaces and a number of unfinished and unoccupied commercial units at Smithfield Market have created a highly visible reminder of the economic and community challenges still to be addressed in this historic part of Dublin.

Ormond Quay Upper is one of several quays along the Liffey, part of maritime developments within the city stretching back to the thirteenth century. The structure dates from the early nineteenth century and is located between O’Donovan Rossa Bridge and Essex Bridge.
