REOPENED IN SEPTEMBER 2019
Considering that the first case of Covid-19 was confirmed here in Ireland on the last day of February 29 2020 re-opening a pub towards the end of 2019 might have been a case of bad timing but it would appear that they have survived as a going concern. I checked and they are open at 4pm today Jan 2 2023 and it was indicated that people who visit spend between 45 minutes and three hours there.
I worked in the area back in the 1970s and do not remember this pub (an early house) but back then I avoided pubs in the area for a variety of reasons which no longer apply in 2023.
To the best of by knowledge this pub was out of action for about 15 years after closing in 2004 after 150 years serving the dockers who worked nearby. According to a friend of mine who owns apartment on Windmill Lane it was frequently visited by members of U2 when they were recording their early albums at Windmill Lane Studios.
Early Houses are public houses that were granted a special licence (introduced 1927) which permits them to open from Monday to Saturday at 7am instead of 10.30am. Having seen the damage that alcohol did to so many families in the docklands area I am not convinced that they were as wonderful as many appear to believe.
