NOT FAR FROM BOLTON STREET COLLEGE

I live across the street from Bolton Street College – or to be more accurate my front door is across the street from the building as my address is Henrietta Place rather than Bolton Street.

Bolton Street College in Dublin was a technical college that existed from 1911 to 1992. It was founded by the Dublin Corporation and was originally located on Bolton Street, Dublin 1. The college later moved to its current campus on Grangegorman Road, Dublin 7.

Bolton Street College offered a wide range of courses, including engineering, architecture, building, and the built environment. It was one of the leading technical colleges in Ireland, and its graduates went on to work in a wide range of industries.

The college was also a center for research and development. It had its own research laboratories, and its staff were involved in a number of important research projects.

Bolton Street College closed in 1992, when it merged with other technical colleges in Dublin to form the Dublin Institute of Technology. However, the Bolton Street campus remains an important part of the DIT, and it continues to be a centre for education and research in the built environment.

The Bolton Street campus is a beautiful and historic building. It was designed by CJ McCarthy and was built in 1908. The building is a three-storey neo-classical structure, and it is decorated with plaster representations of artisan figures. The figures are casts from John Henry Foley’s models for figures at the base of the Albert Memorial on Leinster Lawn.

The Bolton Street campus is home to a number of important facilities, including lecture theatres, laboratories, workshops, a library, and a students’ union. The campus is also home to a number of research centres, including the Centre for Architecture, Building and Environment and the Centre for Sustainable Energy.

The legacy of Bolton Street College continues to inspire and motivate people today. The college’s commitment to education and research is still relevant today, and its graduates continue to make a difference in the world.

LONGFORD TERRACE AND CLOSE BY

SALTHILL AND MONKSTOWN TRAIN STATION

I got off the train at Salthill-Monkstown Station with the intention of walking to Dalkey but I ended up exploring the Glenageary area instead.

Longford Terrace, Monkstown is a set of 28 houses in two terraced blocks of Victorian buildings all of which face the sea and the railway track. There is a linear park between the houses and the railway and I think that it is known as Seapoint Park.

Salthill and Monkstown railway station serves the areas of Salthill (on the coast) and Monkstown (just inland) in Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown, Ireland.

It is situated between Seapoint and Dún Laoghaire DART stations. The station has a car park, ticket office, automated ticket and vending machines. The ticket office is open between 05:45-00:15 AM, Monday to Sunday. The original Salthill station opened in May 1837. It was built by the Dublin and Kingstown Railway. It closed in 1960 and was electrified and reopened in 1984 with the arrival of DART services.

The population of Ireland is just 5 million but over 500,000 passed through Dublin airport this weekend so my policy is to avoid all the stress associated with holiday travel by exploring the city of Dublin. I like the canal areas especially the Grand Canal on the south side of the city.

Portobello is an area of Dublin in Ireland, in the south city centre, bounded to the south by the Grand Canal.

It came into existence as a small suburb south of the city in the 18th century, centred on Richmond Street. During the following century it was completely developed, transforming an area of private estates and farmland into solid Victorian red-bricked living quarters for the middle classes on the larger streets, and terraced housing bordering the canal for the working classes.

As a fast-expanding suburb during the 19th century Portobello attracted many upwardly-mobile families whose members went on to play important roles in politics, the arts and the sciences. Towards the end of the century came an influx of Jews, refugees from pogroms in Eastern Europe, which gave the name “Little Jerusalem” to the area.

James Edward Heron (28 November 1910 – 23 April 1985) was an Irish high diving and springboard diving champion. He won the British Diving Championship in 1932 and represented Ireland at the 1948 Olympic Games.

Heron’s first major successes took place in 1924 when he was thirteen. In July he won the Leinster Championship. A month later he competed in the Tailteann Games, coming third in the Men’s Plain Diving competition. The winner was Olympic champion, Dick Eve. At the same games Heron won the boys’ diving competition. Between then and 1950, he dominated Irish diving, winning thirty-four national titles in both high diving and springboard events.

In 1932 Heron achieved international success by beating Doug Tomalin to win the British Diving Championship at Leeds. In preparation for the 1936 Summer Olympics, Heron spent the first six months of the year in Miami, Florida, where he trained with Pete Desjardins, the 1928 Olympic champion. However, due to a dispute as to which sporting body should represent Irish athletes, Ireland did not participate in the 1936 Olympics. The next games took place in London in 1948 but another dispute over jurisdiction led to Heron and his team mates withdrawing from all swimming and diving events. Heron did, however, compete in the opening heats of the diving competitions before the withdrawal.

Although Heron retired from competitive diving in 1950, he was persuaded to take part in the 1968 Irish three-metre springboard championship held at Blackrock Baths in Dublin. At the age of fifty-seven, he took the title by defeating the reigning champion, George Matulevicze. He continued to take part in diving exhibitions and competitions well into his sixties. At the annual Texaco Sports Star Awards held in January 1977, Heron received the Hall of Fame award from Taoiseach Liam Cosgrave.

In July each year, swimmers compete for the Eddie Heron Cup in a race from Dún Laoghaire to Blackrock. This is organised by Heron’s former club, Sandycove Swimming Club. A plaque in honour of Eddie Heron has been erected near the now-demolished Blackrock Baths where he competed for many years.

James Berwind’s $85m yacht named Scout is currently moored on the River Liffey at Sir John Rogerson’s Quay.

Berwind Corporation (previously also known as Berwind-White Coal Mining Company) is a large privately held American corporation historically involved in the coal industry. Today it is a diversified company involved in property leasing and ownership of unrelated businesses.

It began as a partnership of Edward Julius Berwind, Charles Berwind, and Congressman Allison White and upon White’s death became known as Berwind White Company in 1886. The company was one of the largest producers of coal at the turn of the twentieth century and created several towns in West Virginia and Pennsylvania, including Windber, Pennsylvania and Berwind, West Virginia. It was a litigant in two U.S. Supreme Court decisions: Berwind-White Coal Mining Co. v. Chicago & Erie R. Co., 235 U.S. 371 (1914) and McGoldrick v. Berwind-White Coal Mining Co., 309 U.S. 33 (1940). In 1962 the family corporation moved from directly producing coal to leasing its properties and diversification into ownership of other businesses, including Protective Industries (including Caplugs and Mokon) and, CRC Industries. By 2007 the company’s investments in real estate alone totaled over $3 billion. Berwinds founded the Wilmore Steamship Company in 1930.
