MALLIN RAILWAY STATION

by

LOCALLY KNOWN AS DUN LAOGHAIRE STATION

I worked in Dun Laoghaire for a total of about fifteen years and was, for much of my time there, unaware that the railway station was named Mallin Station. I cannot remember exactly the event but as far as I can remember an American tourist asked me for directions to Mallin Station so I suggest that it was best to visit Dun Laoghaire station and ask at the ticket desk.

Also called Kingstown Harbour the station was renamed Kingstown in 1861, and renamed Dún Laoghaire in 1921. It was given the additional name “Mallin” on 10 April 1966, 50 years after the Easter Rising, when Córas Iompair Éireann renamed 15 major stations after Republican leaders. It is named in honour of Michael Mallin, a leader in the 1916 Easter Rising. although it is usually referred to simply as Dún Laoghaire.

MURALS IN DUN LAOGHAIRE

MORE PHOTOGRAPHS OF MURALS

Between 2021 and 2022 Dún Laoghaire Town has seen 23 stunning artworks installed throughout the town as part of the Dún Laoghaire Anseo street art project.

My visit to Dun Laoghaire today was unexpected and unplanned but I had my iPhone 12 Pro Max with me so I took the opportunity to photograph some of the murals on view. The good news is Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown is expanding its gallery and it is my intention to identify and photograph all street art in the town.

DIGNITY D727 IS A POTTING CATAMARAN

IT OPERATES OUT OF DUN LAOGHAIRE

Dignity D727 is Potting catamaran operating out of Dun Laoghaire harbour.

A potting boat is a fishing boat that is specifically designed to catch lobsters and crabs using pots or traps. Pots are typically made of a metal frame covered with mesh and have one or more funnel-shaped openings that allow the lobsters or crabs to enter but not escape. Pots are baited with fish or other seafood and then lowered to the seabed using ropes and buoys.

Potting boats are typically small and manoeuvrable, making them ideal for fishing in sheltered waters and around rocky reefs. They are also typically equipped with a pot hauler, which is a machine that helps to haul the pots up from the seabed.

Potting is a sustainable fishing method, as it does not damage the seabed and only catches lobsters and crabs that are large enough to enter the pots. Potting boats are an important part of the fishing industry in many parts of the world, including Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Catamarans’ parallel hulls create reliable form stability, which prevents heeling and capsizing, and greatly reduces the vessel roll at rest and at trolling speeds. One of the most obvious advantages of catamaran stability is in the elimination of seasickness for passengers.

THE SECTION OF THE MARINA NEAR THE WESTERN BREAKWATER

DUN LAOGHAIRE HARBOUR

I am not certain if the is only one marina or multiple marinas in Dun Laoghaire.

I had some difficulty capturing worthwhile images as I was shooting into intense sunlight, not recommended, and I was also shooting handheld.

The harbour is divided into four major inner harbours by various piers and breakwaters. In the south west corner the Old Harbour (sometimes termed the inner Coal Harbour) is enclosed by the Old Pier constructed in 1767. The Old Harbour incorporates tidal public slipway. The exit from the Old Harbour leads to the Coal Harbour, bounded by the Traders Wharf which possesses a non-tidal public slipway. The Coal Harbour leads past the Marina Harbour which was created around 2001 together with the Western Breakwater and Eastern Breakwater to protect smaller boats. The Main Harbour covers the sweep from the Northern and Eastern breakwaters which mark a broadly North north east direction road past the harbour entrance and including all of the eastern part of the Harbour including St. Michael’s Pier and Carlisle Pier and the five ship berths.
