This is the oldest photograph that I can locate of this once very popular pub on Thomas Street. I only have one other old photograph.

A few days ago I was in the Thomas Street area and a local who was interested in my camera and the history of the area mentioned that would have my last chance the get the best pint in Dublin, at the right price, on the weekend as the Clock Pub [including the whole block] was to be demolished.

Today, 18 February 2023, it was mentioned in some publications that the building in which the Clock is located has been sold and that the pub would close this weekend [18-13 February 2023] and that the future of the site as uncertain.

Windy Arbour (Na Glasáin) is a small suburban village in the Dundrum area of Dublin, Ireland. Situated between Dundrum and Milltown, along the banks of the Slang River (also known as the Dundrum or Slann River).

The name of the area was originally Irish Na Glasáin, “the green land”; this was Anglicised as ‘Glassons’. The name Windy Harbour or Sandy Arbour was later applied, referring to a landing-point on the River Slang. A starch mill was formerly located there. “Arbour” once had the meaning “grass plot, lawn, garden”; it is possible that the name was intended as a direct translation of glasáin.

Perhaps the most famous person to live in Windy Arbour was Irish patriot Robert Emmet, who grew up in The Casino, a manor house that is now known as Emmet House, where the Secretariat of Secondary schools in Ireland is currently housed. It is located next to the Catholic church on Bird Avenue and was formerly known as Carton House.

There is a primary school in Columbanus Estate known as Our Lady’s National School, Clonskeagh. The area is served by Windy Arbour Luas stop and by the number 17, 44 and 61 bus routes.

My mother will be 103 years old in May 2023 but for various reasons we have had cancel any celebrations planned for 2020, 2021 and 2022. To compensate we had planned a large event this year but once again it had to be cancelled so my sister and myself decided to organise a meal at Gleesons on Booterstown Avenue but life got a bit confused as the staff thought that it was a birthday party. However, we had a wonderful time and my mother really enjoyed herself.

THE BLUE BUILDING WAS A SCHOOL

Lána na Cuaiche is the Irish name for this laneway.

The school which was located on this very narrow lane was associated with the nearby Roman Catholic church of Saint Michin’s, this was one of several primary schools in the area, and is of significance as a repository of memory for local people who attended. Its current use by a long-established fruit and vegetable wholesalers continues the markets tradition of the area.
