TWIN TRANSPORT DEPOTS IN LIMERICK JULY 2025

LIMERICK TRANSPORT HUBS [ON ROXBORO ROAD JULY 2025]

Just a stone's throw from the public-facing platforms of Limerick's Colbert Station lies the real engine room of the region's transport network. I spent a few minutes capturing the industrial beauty of the sprawling Bus Éireann and Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail) depots, which sit side-by-side on Roxboro Road.

These photos show the "behind-the-scenes" world that passengers rarely get to see. This isn't a terminal; it's a home.

On one side, the Bus Éireann depot is a hive of activity. My camera was drawn to the perfect, orderly rows of buses, gleaming after a wash or waiting for their morning routes. This facility is the main maintenance garage for the entire Limerick fleet, harbouring over 100 vehicles. It’s where the hard graft of fuelling, cleaning, and repairing happens. The site is also in the middle of a major upgrade, preparing to welcome a new, fully electric fleet—a sign of a quieter, greener future.

Right next door, the scenery shifts from rubber tyres to steel wheels. The Iarnród Éireann Limerick Works is the domain of heavy engineering. As these photos show, it's a tangle of tracks, maintenance sheds, and resting carriages. This is where the rail stock is serviced and maintained, ensuring the trains that connect Limerick to Dublin, Galway, and beyond are safe and ready for their journeys.

It's a fascinating place for a photographer, full of strong lines, industrial textures, and a sense of powerful machinery at rest. This is where the journey truly begins.
