BACK IN MAY 2018 I COULD NOT GET A ROOM AT THE CLAYTON
VIEWS OF THE CLAYTON HOTEL WHICH DOMINATES THE URBAN LANDSCAPE [PHOTOGRAPHED MAY 2018]
History of the Site: Steamboat Quay: Before the modern hotel stood on the site, the area was known as Steamboat Quay. As its name implies, this was a functional part of Limerick's industrial waterfront and port during the 19th century. It served as a key mooring point for the steam-powered vessels that navigated the River Shannon, transporting goods and passengers. The quay was an active commercial hub, lined with storehouses for loading and unloading agricultural produce and other goods being exported from the region. The hotel's location, therefore, is built directly upon a site central to Limerick's maritime and mercantile history.
History of the Hotel: The striking, 17-storey building that defines the quay today was constructed in 2002. Its innovative design is dramatically positioned, literally straddling the original 19th-century quay wall and cantilevering out over the River Shannon.
The Clarion Hotel (2002-2016): Upon its opening, the hotel was branded as the Clarion Hotel. It immediately became a prominent city landmark, recognisable as Ireland's tallest hotel.
The Clayton Hotel (2016-Present): In 2016, the hotel was acquired by the Dalata Hotel Group, Ireland's largest hotel operator. Following the acquisition, it was rebranded and became the Clayton Hotel Limerick, which it remains today.
Popularity and Clientele:
The Clayton Hotel is exceptionally popular and maintains a high profile in the city for several key reasons:
Iconic Location & Views: Its unique position on the waterfront and its sheer height offer unrivalled panoramic views over the River Shannon and Limerick City.
Central Convenience: It is located in the city centre, making it an ideal base for exploring landmarks like King John's Castle and the Hunt Museum.
Extensive Facilities: The hotel is well-equipped with a leisure centre, swimming pool (overlooking the river), and large-scale conference and event facilities.
This combination of factors attracts a diverse clientele. It is very popular with:
Tourists (both domestic and international) drawn to the views and central location.
Families, who use the leisure facilities and family-friendly services.
Business & Corporate Guests, who utilise the extensive meeting and conference rooms.
Event & Wedding Guests, as it is a prominent venue for functions. It has also been known to host visiting sports teams, such as the Munster Rugby team.
