A DERELICT BUILDING ON ROXBORO ROAD IN LIMERICK

FRIENDS OF BOSNIA OFFICE IN LIMERICK [A RELIC FROM THE 1990s]

A Centre for Humanitarian Aid

The sign "Friends of Bosnia" dates from the 1990s. The building was used as an office or centre for a local Limerick initiative formed in response to the humanitarian crisis arising from the Bosnian War (1992-1995).

During this period, Ireland accepted a number of "programme refugees" from Bosnia. Oireachtas (Irish Parliament) records from 1993 confirm the arrival of an initial group of 178 refugees in September 1992, with the community growing in subsequent years.

The "Friends of Bosnia" office on Roxboro Road would have functioned as a base for:

Organising local aid efforts.

Coordinating the collection of donations (such as food, medicine, and clothing).

Providing a contact and support point for the Bosnian community in Limerick.

Current Status: Derelict

The organisation is no longer active at this location. The building has been disused for a considerable time and has fallen into disrepair.

This is confirmed by the Limerick City and County Council, which officially lists the "Friends of Bosnia, Roxboro Road" property on its Derelict Sites Register.

Stock photography archives also identify the building as an "abandoned 'Friends of Bosnia' office".

Recent Interest

In 2020, the building was the subject of a public petition. This petition referred to the site as the "abandoned house (Friends of Bosnia)" and proposed a new, unrelated initiative to renovate it. This confirms the building was already abandoned by this date.

In summary, the sign is a remnant of a 1990s Limerick-based humanitarian group. The building is the former location of that group and is now registered as derelict.
