The Fairview Footbridge: Replacement and Controversy

The footbridge in my photographs is a newer structure that replaced an older one connecting the Fairview playground and park to businesses and bus stops on the north side of Fairview Road. I must say, I quite like its design.

Locals seem to appreciate the new bridge, so I was surprised to discover this 2017 statement by local politician Aodhán Ó Ríordáin:

I am interested in hearing your views in relation to recent suggestions from Dublin City Council that they will remove the Fairview Footbridge and replace it with a pedestrian crossing to make way for the Clontarf – Amiens Street cycle lane. Over three years ago, I successfully lobbied for the bridge to be refurbished, and €500,000 was invested by the council at the time.” [dated July 6, 2015]

Thankfully, the pedestrian bridge has survived.
