ABOUT THE LUAS TRAM STOP IN DUNDRUM

Today a ticket inspector told me that LUAS stands for Light Urban Area Service. I must admit that I was unaware of this.

Here's a detailed description and history of the Dundrum Luas stop:

Location:

Dundrum is a thriving suburb located south of Dublin city centre. The Dundrum Luas stop sits prominently within the area, adjacent to the Dundrum Town Centre, a major shopping and entertainment complex.

Line:

The Dundrum stop is on the Luas Green Line, which connects the southern suburbs of Dublin to the city centre and then continues northwards.

Platforms:

The Dundrum stop has two side platforms, one for northbound trams towards Broombridge, and one for southbound trams heading towards Brides Glen.

Facilities:

  • Ticket vending machines
  • Real-time passenger information displays
  • Sheltered waiting areas
  • Cycle + Ride Facility: Holds 52 bikes (10 secure bike lockers, 21 bike racks)

History

Original Tram Service (1879 - 1958):

Dundrum's connection to Dublin's public transport network began far before the arrival of the Luas. A steam tramway, part of the Dublin and Blessington Steam Tramway, operated from 1879 to the mid-20th century, stopping in Dundrum village.

Harcourt Street Railway Line (1854 - 1958):

The original Dundrum railway station was part of the Harcourt Street railway line connecting Dublin city centre to Bray. While this line closed in the late 1950s, parts of its alignment were later used for the Luas Green Line.

Luas Green Line Construction (2004):

The Luas Green Line opened in 2004. Dundrum Luas stop occupies the same location as the old Dundrum railway station, utilising the existing bridge structures and preserving some historical elements.

The Old Station Building:

Beside the modern Dundrum Luas platforms, you'll find the old Dundrum railway station building. This structure has been converted into shops, with its distinctive arches forming shop windows.

Significance

The Dundrum Luas stop serves a major suburb of Dublin. It's a popular interchange point due to its proximity to:

  • Dundrum Town Centre: The presence of this large shopping centre drives significant foot traffic through the Luas stop.
  • Residential Areas: Dundrum contains numerous residential areas, and the Luas
