PROGRESSIVE WEB APPLICATION VERSION

SEPTEMBER 2022 PHOTO DIARYPHOTOGRAPHED BY WILLIAM MURPHY

Street Photography and the associate websites and blogs are the elements of my main hobby. I say main, as I do have other hobbies.

Over the years I have experiments with different forms of hosting and software but as I have progressed I have found all hosting services to be very restrictive and constraining so I have tended towards self hosting solutions.

I have tried many software solutions but eventually settled of Rapidweaver however I do operate a number of Wordpress Sites which I will discontinue over the next two years.

One problem that I have had is that according to Google my sites failed to meet their strict requirements for mobile sites [Core Web Vitals]. I have tried multiple solutions but the changes have been minor. At best my rating was about 37% [today using Sparkle I have achieved 99%]

Recently things at Rapidweaver have become complicated and as a result I may not be able to totally depend on their software going forward so I have had to examine other solutions and one that I investigated is Sparkle which performs very well if Google Core Web Vitals is the gold standard. I should mention that I do intend to remain with Rapidweaver and I will employ their new solutions going forward but I will also employ other solutions. I am also testing Blocs 4 but at this stage do not have enough experience of the product to make any comments.

Web Vitals is an initiative by Google to provide unified guidance for quality signals that are essential to delivering a great user experience on the web.
Google has provided a number of tools over the years to measure and report on performance. Some developers are experts at using these tools, while others have found the abundance of both tools and metrics challenging to keep up with.
Site owners should not have to be performance gurus in order to understand the quality of experience they are delivering to their users. The Web Vitals initiative aims to simplify the landscape, and help sites focus on the metrics that matter most, the Core Web Vitals.

Core Web Vitals are the subset of Web Vitals that apply to all web pages, should be measured by all site owners, and will be surfaced across all Google tools. Each of the Core Web Vitals represents a distinct facet of the user experience, is measurable in the field, and reflects the real-world experience of a critical user-centric outcome.
The metrics that make up Core Web Vitals will evolve over time. The current set for 2020 focuses on three aspects of the user experience—loading, interactivity, and visual stability—and includes the following metrics (and their respective thresholds).

THE CHURCH OF ST JOHN THE EVANGELISTDUBLIN ROAD KILKENNY SEPTEMBER 2022

The church is often known as the O'Loughlin Memorial Church.

The Church of Saint John the Evangelist, or John's Church, is a Gothic Revival style church in Kilkenny, Ireland. The Church was designed by William Hague and built from 1903 to 1908 on the site of an earlier church located in the graveyard. The grounds are of little interest but it is worth viewing the interior of the building.

CORNER TOWER MAUDLIN STREETKILKENNY SEPTEMBER 2022

Situated on Maudlin Street, the structure was at the outer corner of a garden wall, and would represent the north-east corner of a wall enclosing the lower part of the St John’s suburb. Its overall dimensions are about 4m tall, and 2.2m in diameter, with walls 0.3m thick, and an open back towards the former garden (with short lengths of the connecting walls). There is an offset for a ‘parapet’, with a single row of slots at its base (probably for water run-off). Internally, there are indications of five blocked windows (or perhaps gun ports) at 1.7m above ground level, and 0.5 m square. It may well be of 16th-century date.

GREEN WASHING BIRD FEEDERBY ANITA REYNOLDS

Anita's artwork is an interpretation of Irish heritage in clay and textiles.
she has five ranges of framed textile art: Irish Birds, Irish Heritage, Landscapes, The Seasons and Carved in Cloth.

She also creates a range of ceramic Love Birds that are suitable for the garden and has just introduced a new range of ceramic birdhouses.

Her ceramic Woodland Angels are lanterns. They come in Oak, Ash, Beech, Hazel, Meadow and Birch. She presses leaves from her garden into the clay to create pieces that are touched by nature.

A group of crows is called a “murder.” There are several different explanations for the origin of this term, mostly based on old folk tales and superstitions.

This was actually photographed in September 2021 but I did not publish the photographs until 2022.

Jessica completed her studies in 3D design, model making and digital arts in 2019 learning to work with a wide variety of materials and tools. This combined with the skills and knowledge she gained as a wax work technician and mold maker in bronze art has influenced the work that she currently produces. Here sculpture is intricate and detailed.

OUR LADY OF DOLOURS AT NIGHT WHEN I WAS YOUNG I THOUGHT THAT IT WAS DONORS

When I was young we, as a family, visited this church every so often for Sunday mass and until I visited a few year ago I thought that that it was the Lady Of Donors Church so I was a bit surprised when I discovered the it is the Lady Of Dolours Church [apparently dolours means poetic grief or sorrow]. I should explain that my father constantly complained that they were always seeking donations.

THE BEST NIGHT BY BOB QUINNPHOTOGRAPHED AT NIGHT DURING THE SCULPTURE IN CONTEXT EXHIBITION

Born in 1948, Bob Quinn enjoyed a long career within the Irish advertising business as a commercial artist, visualiser and designer before becoming a full-time sculptor in 2002. Bob's sculptures celebrate the drama and nobility in often the most ordinary of human activity. The sadness, the humour, the joy. He likes to explore the theatrical quality of three-dimension and is particularly interested in the dramatic importance of light and shadow, and how the colour and appearance of surface texture constantly changes.

REMNANT ECOLOGIES BY JONY EASTERBY I WAS LEFT IN THE DARK IN THE BOTANIC GARDENS

Responding to our relationship with the natural world, these intimate artworks explore the cultural remnants humans have created through our love of nature. Empty bird cages, a playful song, the insides of cuckoo clocks and fragments from botanical dictionaries are intertwined, telling their story through unforgettable sound and light installations in the serene surroundings of the gardens after dark.

Conleth Gent was born in Newbridge, Co. Kildare and studied at U.C.D. University College Dublin. His love of wood and working with wood can be clearly seen in each of his unique pieces. He is concerned mainly with personal expression through the use of figurative elements and occasionally abstract forms. His approach is individualistic, communicating something of the character of the particular piece of wood and his interaction and relationship with it.

ST FRANCIS BRIDGEWOLFE TONE STREET KILKENNY SEPTEMBER 2022

Despite many protests and legal objections the St Francis Bridge in Kilkenny was opened in 2017 after massive cost overruns. The new bridge provides a direct route for cars and heavy vehicles right through the “Medieval Mile” of the city, splitting St Canice’s Cathedral from the rest of Kilkenny.

ORIGINALLY ARCHERSGROVE MILLFENNESSEY'S MILL ON THE RIVER NORE IN KILKENNY

Sometime in 1891 Mr Fennessey, proprietor of the well-known seed warehouse, High Street, Kilkenny, and of the extensive nurseries convenient to Kilkenny City, leased the long-disused Archersgrove Mill, for the purpose of converting the premises into bone-crushing and linseed cake-crushing mills and perhaps sawmills. At the time it was hoped Fennessy’s enterprise would convert a silent ruin into a busy centre of employment.

BEYOND THE STILEI ASSUMED THAT THERE WAS A RIGHT OF WAY

A stile is a structure or opening that provides people passage over or through a boundary via steps, ladders, or narrow gaps. Stiles are often built in rural areas along footpaths, fences, walls, or hedges that enclose animals, allowing people to move freely.

As there was a stile at the Mill I decided to cross and explore the surrounding area but as there was no obvious destination I decided to return to the mill.

THIS IS NOT CROW'S WELLCANAL WALK IN KILKENNY JULY 2021 AND SEPTEMBER 2022

This series of images is from my July 2021 and September 2022 visits to Kilkenny.

This well is located on the Canal Walk on the bank of the River Nore. In 2018 a dog-walker told me that it is known as "Crow's Well" but at the time I believed that she may have been incorrect as my understanding is that Crow's Well Lock is at Fennessey's Mill. However, I was unable to locate a well at Fennessy's Mill [Archersgrove Mill] when I visited in September 2022. However, I recently discovered that Crow's well was identified as Spa Well on some old maps and that the well, at Fennessey's Mill, is so overgrown with briars and bushes that it is almost impossible to locate it.

SAINT JOHN'S GRAVEYARDDUBLIN ROAD KILKENNY SEPTEMBER 2022

When I first visited this old graveyard I noted that the colour of the gravestones was different to what I normally see in Irish graveyards [orange/brown rather than grey/white]. I assume that gravestones were covered in what was an orange algae, lichen or fungi however this visited I noticed that, in many cases, the orange material had been bleached pure white

THE POND AT KILKENNY CASTLEYET ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

This visit I noticed that the water was covered with a carpet of green and when I examined my photographs from 2021 it was much the same. After some research I discovered that there is an environmental problem as an invasive species of plant is hindering efforts to maintain the duck pond in Kilkenny’s Castle Park.

THOMAS WOODGATE MEMORIALMARCH 2021 AND SEPTEMBER 2022

I first photographed this memorial in March 2021 but forgot to publish the resulting images.

In 2021 I used a Sony 7RIV with a Sony PZ 28-135mm Lens and in 2022 I uses a Canon 5D MkIII with a Sigma 24-105mm Lens.

Thomas was from Callan in Co Kilkenny, the son of Edward and Hanora Woodgate of Mill Street, and until recently it was assumed that he was 18 when he signed up to the Royal Air Force in late 1918. He died on board RMS Leinster on 10 October 1918, when it was torpedoed by a German submarine close to the Kish Lighthouse while on its way to Holyhead.

Talbot’s tower defended the south-west corner of Kilkenny’s Hightown; the wall to the north extends for 850m as far as the river Breagagh, that to the east for 350m to Kilkenny castle.

The tower was strategically sited to take advantage of a low hill and from its parapets there are extensive views in all directions, making it an extremely effective watch-tower.

In the 13th century William Marshall, the younger, was Lord of Leinster. He founded a monastery for the Dominicans, known as the Black Friars, or the Order of Preachers. The Order was founded by St. Dominic and its first house in Ireland was built in 1224, in Dublin. In the following year The Black Abbey was built in Kilkenny. Kilkenny was a walled town in the middle ages, and the Black Abbey was built outside the town wall in what is now known as Abbey Street.

A STAND-UP PADDLE BOARD COMMUTEALONG THE RIVER NORE IN KILKENNY SEPTEMBER 2022

Modern standup paddleboarding began in the 1940s in Waikiki. John Ah Choy was a local Hawaiian who surfed, but as he got older and was unable to get up and down from his board, he would stand on his board from the break and paddle out with a canoe paddle to catch waves. His sons, Leroy and Bobby Ah Choy, and their friend, Duke Kahanamoku, started to mimic this while they taught surfing to visiting tourists. They did this as a way to keep an eye on surf students while also monitoring the incoming swell. They also utilized the vantage point of being out on the water to take pictures. As the style became popular with other surfers, it took on the name Beach Boy Surfing after the instructors, who were called Waikiki Beach Boys.

"Itsy Bitsy Spider" (also known as "Incy Wincy Spider" in Australia and Great Britain, and several other similar-sounding names) is a popular nursery rhyme and fingerplay that describes the adventures of a spider as it ascends, descends, and reascends the downspout or "waterspout" of a gutter system (or, alternatively, the spout of a teapot or open-air reservoir). It is usually accompanied by a sequence of gestures that mimic the words of the song.
