THE HALFPENNY BRIDGE
When the cast-iron pedestrian bridge first opened in May 1816, it was officially christened the Wellington Bridge. This was to honour Arthur Wellesley, the 1st Duke of Wellington, who was a Dublin-born statesman and soldier, famous for his victory at the Battle of Waterloo the previous year.
