An Avenue Steeped in Catholic Influence

As you walk down Clonliffe Road, you'll encounter several landmarks that point to its strong association with the Catholic Church. Near the road's border with Drumcondra lies the entrance to the residence of the Archbishop of Dublin. This grand residence serves as the official seat of the Archbishop, the head of the Catholic Archdiocese of Dublin.

Clonliffe College: A Legacy of Education

Dominating a significant stretch of Clonliffe Road is the former site of Clonliffe College. Established in 1859, the college served as a prestigious seminary training priests for the Archdiocese of Dublin and beyond. Its imposing Victorian buildings with gothic features were a defining part of the streetscape.

Closure and Redevelopment

Unfortunately, Clonliffe College closed its doors in 1996 due to declining vocations to the priesthood. This closure marked a significant change for Clonliffe Road. Much of the college grounds have been sold off for redevelopment projects. While some of the historic buildings have been preserved and incorporated into new developments, others have been demolished to make way for modern structures.

Not Merged with DCU

It's important to clarify that Clonliffe College did not become part of Dublin City University (DCU). DCU has its own campus on the northside of Dublin, separate from Clonliffe Road. While Clonliffe College offered seminary education, DCU is a secular university with a wider range of academic programs.
