WHAT IS AN AMBO

In Christian liturgy, an ambo is a raised platform or lectern from which scriptures are read or chanted. It typically stands in the sanctuary near the altar. The word "ambo" comes from the Greek word "ambon," meaning "edge" or "rim."

Historically, ambones were prominent features in early Christian churches and are still used in some Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholic churches. They often had elaborate designs and were considered important liturgical furnishings.

In contemporary Western churches, the ambo has been largely replaced by a simpler lectern or pulpit. However, many modern churches still use the term "ambo" to refer to the place where scripture is proclaimed.

The ambo serves as a visual and symbolic focal point for the proclamation of the Word of God, emphasising its importance in Christian worship.
