THE PIKEMAN

THE PIKEMAN IN MIDLETON IS NOW ON A PLINTH

THE PIKEMAN IN MIDLETON IS NOW ON A PLINTH FOR ITS OWN PROTECTION [SEPTEMBER 2025]

When I visited Midleton in September 2025 I had difficulty finding it as I was expecting it to be at ground-level at the same location as the plaque but it was at a slightly unexpected location and mounted on a tall plinth. As mentioned in another post I first photographed this in 2016 but when I visited again in 2019 I could not find the sculpture and decided that I must have been confused or visited the wrong location. Later, I discovered that the statue had been removed for repair as it had been vandalised not long before my 2019 visit to the town of Midleton. Apparently the scroll had been stolen.

Freedom's Dawn (Maidneachan Saoirse) by John Toomey

Located outside the Courthouse in Midleton, County Cork, stands the striking bronze sculpture known as "Freedom's Dawn" or, in Irish, "Maidneachan Saoirse." Popularly referred to as "The Pikeman," this powerful work was created by the accomplished sculptor John Toomey and commemorates the 1798 Rebellion, a pivotal event in Irish history.

The sculpture depicts a formidable figure of a rebel pikeman from the period, captured in a moment of determined advance. The artist, John Toomey, has imbued the figure with a sense of raw energy and unwavering resolve. The detailed musculature, the determined set of the jaw, and the firm grip on the pike all contribute to a dynamic and evocative portrayal of the revolutionary spirit that defined the rebellion. The choice of a pikeman is historically significant, as the pike was the primary weapon of the United Irishmen rebels, symbolising a peasant uprising against a powerful, well-equipped force.

The Artist and His Art

John Toomey, a Limerick-born artist, is renowned for his historical and commemorative sculptures. His work frequently engages with themes of Irish history, conflict, and memory. Toomey's style is characterised by a powerful realism and an ability to convey deep emotion and narrative through the bronze medium. Unlike more abstract memorials, Toomey's figures are visceral and immediate, grounding historical events in the human form. "Freedom's Dawn" is a prime example of his work, capturing not just a historical archetype but the fierce personal courage of those who fought in the rebellion.

Theft, Repair, and Reinstallation

In a lamentable act of vandalism, the bronze scroll held in the pikeman's left hand was stolen from the sculpture. This necessitated the removal of the entire statue for repair in 2019. The theft of the scroll, an integral part of the sculpture's narrative representing the ideals and proclamations of the United Irishmen, was a significant loss.

Following a period of restoration, "Freedom's Dawn" was rightfully returned to its prominent position in Midleton. In a significant enhancement to its display and to provide greater security, the sculpture was mounted on a new, robust stone plinth. This reinstallation has not only restored the monument to the public but has also given it a more formal and elevated presence, befitting its historical importance. The return of The Pikeman, now standing proudly on its new base, was a celebrated event for the community, symbolising resilience in the face of mindless vandalism.

This important piece of public art continues to serve as a potent reminder of Midleton's connection to the 1798 Rebellion and as a tribute to the enduring quest for Irish freedom.
