FEVER HOSPITAL STEPS
In Cork City, a flight of wide stone steps ascends from the area of the Heineken Brewery on Leitrim Street, climbing steeply towards the residential enclave of Richmond Hill. Known locally as the Fever Hospital Steps, they are more than a mere piece of urban infrastructure; they are a historical artery, a physical remnant of a journey once undertaken by the city’s most vulnerable citizens. For decades, these steps formed the primary approach to the Cork Fever Hospital and House of Recovery, an institution deliberately placed in what was considered an ‘airy part’ of the city, high above the dense, low-lying districts where disease was rampant.
