EXAMPLES OF PAINT-A-BOX STREET ART IN CORK
EXAMPLES OF PAINT-A-BOX STREET ART IN CORK [MAY 2019]
One of my favourite things about exploring Cork is discovering the fantastic 'Paint-a-Box' street art. These small-scale murals on utility boxes bring so much life and colour to the city's streets. I photographed a collection of them back in May 2019 and was thoroughly impressed by the local talent.
Returning in September 2025, I was looking forward to discovering a new batch of designs. However, I found that most of the artwork from my previous visit was still intact, with very few new pieces to be seen.
This prompted a question in my mind about the purpose of such a scheme. The beauty of street art is often its temporary, ever-changing nature. It reflects a city in motion. While the longevity of the Cork pieces is impressive, it feels like a missed opportunity for renewal.
Surely the point of a project like this is to be a dynamic, revolving gallery on the kerbside? 'Recycling' the boxes every few years would give more artists a chance to contribute and would keep the streets feeling fresh and creatively vibrant. It’s a pity to see such a brilliant idea become static.
