William Ashford, who for many years was an apothecary and general practitioner at Ballsbridge, and died at his residence, No. 1 Serpentine Avenue, on 15th July, 1892, in his 80th year. A pillar memorial to him was erected at Irishtown in 1893, commemoration of his services for half a century to the poor of the parish.

His grandfather was William Ashford [1746-1824] the well known English landscape painter who worked exclusively in Ireland.

The memorial is a simple pillar made of limestone. It is about 10 feet tall and has a plaque on the front that reads:

IN MEMORY OF

DR WILLIAM ASHFORD

APOTHECARY AND GENERAL PRACTITIONER

WHO DIED 15TH JULY 1892

IN HIS 80TH YEAR

THIS MONUMENT IS ERECTED BY THE POOR OF THE PARISH

IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE OF HIS BENEVOLENCE AND KINDNESS

I included a photograph of Cambridge Road as seen from Thorncastle Street.

Thorncastle Street and adjacent Bridge Street were used in the 1999 film Agnes Browne as the location for the market stall and church scenes beside the flat blocks. Ringsend has also been a location for a number of other notable films including In The Name Of The Father, Educating Rita (Rita's home was in Ringsend) and The General. Ringsend is served by St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church, on Thorncastle Street, building began in 1858 and it was opened in 1859 by Archbishop Cullen, the parish was constituted in 1905 from Sandymount.

Whelan House is a housing complex on Thorncastle Street, Ringsend, backing on to the river Dodder. Built in the 1930s, it was named in memory of Patrick Whelan (1893–1916), who was active in the Ringsend branch of the Gaelic League and a Volunteer under the command of Éamon de Valera during the Easter Rising. He was killed in crossfire during the battle of Mount Street Bridge. I came across an account online claiming that Thorncastle Street was where Whelan was born but that is not true as it is most likely that his family lived in Pembroke Cottages.

I must that I had not really noticed this new building before but I should have as I once worked for the  British and Irish Steam Packet Company which originally occupied the site.

Apparently TikTok the  Chinese-owned social media platform had considered occupying the property on a 12-year lease along with the Tropical Fruit Warehouse another new development on Sir John Rogerson’s Quay. My understanding is that TikTok proceeded with its plan to occupy the smaller property it cancelled its plan to lease the Shipping Office complex.

Since the acquisition of the first site in 2014, Marlet has grown to become one of Ireland’s largest independently owned property companies. Marlet now controls and manages property assets valued at over €2.5bn for its investors.

I visited Sir John Rogerson's Quay as I had expected to see the USS Mesa Verde docked here but unfortunately it was elsewhere and it was in a restricted location. However, I did meet a very nice lady from Ukraine who is currently living and working in Cork and she had decided go get at train and spend a day in Dublin.

USS Mesa Verde (LPD-19) is the third San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock of the United States Navy. She is the first U.S. Navy warship to be named after the Mesa Verde National Park in the U.S. state of Colorado.

As of the early 21st century, the previously functional maritime buildings and features of Sir John Rogerson's Quay have been redeveloped for heritage tourism, and newer office buildings built on the quay. This has included redevelopment of the quay's 'campshire' warehouses (associated with the historical use of the quay as a military 'camp'), and the renovation of a mid-19th century diving bell made by Grendons of Drogheda. The diving bell has been a feature of the quays since the 1870s, and was used to build and maintain many of the walls of Dublin's quays.

Today I got the 17 bus from Roebuck road to Dundrum and in my opinion it is the most unreliable bus service that I have encountered. I had to wait about 45 minutes for a bus that is supposed to have a frequency of 20 minutes and this was not an isolated incident.

William Dargan Bridge, opened in 2004, is a cable-stayed bridge in Dundrum, Dublin in Ireland. It carries the Luas light rail line (Green Line) across a busy road junction. The bridge connects rail alignments which were formerly part of the Harcourt Street railway line.

The bridge crosses the R112 and R117 regional roads as well as the little-known Slang River.

The name commemorates William Dargan who was involved in bringing railways to many parts of Ireland. At the time of opening the Bridge was the only part of the old Harcourt line that had not been built by Dargan.[citation needed]

It should be noted that there is also a Dargan Bridge in Belfast which I have also photographed.
