ABOUT THE ARTIST

FREEDOM IS A SCULPTURE BY ALEXANDRA WEJCHERT

In September 2021, the stainless steel sculpture "Freedom" by Alexandra Wejchert was installed on the North Campus of Maynooth University, under a long-term loan agreement between AIB and the University.

Commissioned by AIB in 1985, the 11.5-metre-high sculpture was considered among the most ambitious large-scale exterior sculptures in Ireland at the time. When AIB relocated its headquarters from Ballsbridge, "Freedom" needed a new home. Now, it stands as a defining feature on the landscape of Maynooth University, a publicly accessible exterior artwork for the community and the wider region.

The Sculpture: "Freedom"

"Freedom" is an abstract sculpture crafted from stainless steel. Its towering height and reflective surface make it a striking presence on the university campus. The sculpture's form is open to interpretation, but its title suggests themes of liberation, aspiration, and the pursuit of knowledge – all fitting for an academic environment.

The Artist: Alexandra Wejchert

Alexandra Wejchert is a renowned sculptor known for her large-scale public works. Her sculptures often feature abstract forms and explore themes of movement, energy, and the relationship between art and its environment. "Freedom" is a testament to Wejchert's skill and artistic vision.

Alexandra Wejchert has a sculpture at the University of Limerick campus. It is called "Geometric Forms" and is located near the Robert Schuman Building. It is a large stainless steel sculpture made up of six identical semi-crescent elements connected at the centre.

AIB's Move and Facebook's Acquisition

AIB (Allied Irish Banks) moved its headquarters from the Ballsbridge site in the early 2000s as part of a larger strategic plan. The site was subsequently acquired by Facebook, who established their international headquarters there. The move allowed Facebook to expand its presence in Ireland and provided a modern campus for its growing workforce.
