THE GREEK ORTHODOX COMMUNITY OF THE ANNUNCIATION

ARBOUR HILL – CAVALRY ROAD

On Sunday the 5th of March the community had the opportunity to celebrate Sunday of Orthodoxy with the blessing of his eminence Archbishop Nikitas and with the presence of the very reverent archimandrite Fr. Nephon. This special feast unites all in orthodoxy after a period of isolation.

The Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation is located in central Dublin, at the Arbour Hill Area and it is adjacent to the Hellenic School.

This very attractive little church is not easy to find unless you know the area. The church is a reminder that the city has undergone huge demographic changes over the past twenty year but they moved out of Arbour Hill in 2001 after they got there own church in Harold’s Cross.

Before the building on the corner of Arbour Hill became a church it was a factory or workshop originally it began as kindergarten school in 1890.

The building was bought by the congregation in 1993 for £80,550, and was consecrated 12 months later after major renovation works.

The Sunday Holy Liturgy takes place from 11am to 12pm.

The Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation, also known as the Church of St. Gabriel, is an Eastern Orthodox church in Nazareth, Israel. It is one of two claimants to the site of the Annunciation – in which angel Gabriel appeared to the Virgin Mary and announced that she would give birth to Jesus – the other being the Catholic Basilica of the Annunciation.

Likely first established in Byzantine-era Palaestina Prima, it was rebuilt during the time of the Crusades, and again in the 18th century under the rule of Zahir al-Umar, the Arab governor of the Galilee.

Known colloquially among the Greek Orthodox worshippers of Galilee whom it serves as Kniset el-Rûm[i], or Church of the Eastern Romans in Levantine Arabic, the church is located over an underground spring, which according to Eastern Orthodox belief is where the Virgin Mary was drawing water at the time of the Annunciation. Water from the spring still runs inside the apse of the church and also fed the adjacent site of Mary’s Well, located 150 yards (140 m) away.

ST PATRICK’S CATHOLIC CHURCH IN TRIM

COUNTY MEATH CHRISTMAS 2016

Saint Patrick’s is a Gothic Revival church set in landscaped grounds which sweep down from Patrick Street towards the grounds of Trim Castle. Designed by William Hague, architectural quality is apparent in the scale, form, features and materials. The combination of the rock-faced rubble limestone and ashlar dressings provide interesting textural detail. The artistic execution of the carved detailing on the exterior and the interior features, such as the mosaics, reredos and the stained glass windows, compliment and enhance this imposing church. The interior of the church is ornamented by Celtic mosaics, a white marble reredos by Pearse and Sons, side alters and communion rail by W.H. Byrne and stained glass windows depicting the crucifixion and the history of Trim.

TRIM CATHEDRAL IN COUNTY MEATH

PHOTOGRAPHED CHRISTMAS DAY 2016

As far as I can remember this was the only time that I gained access to this church as the gates have been locked every other time that I have visited Trim. As there was a service underway I was unable to explore the interior of the building … I returned the next day but the gate was chained.

The Cathedral Church of St Patrick, Trim is a cathedral of the Church of Ireland in Trim, County Meath, Ireland. Previously the cathedral of the Diocese of Meath, it is now one of two cathedrals in the United Dioceses of Meath and Kildare which is part of the ecclesiastical province of Dublin.

The tower is a remnant of the medieval parish Church of Trim.

Walter de Brugge, an English-born judge, was appointed vicar of St. Patrick’s in 1381. Robert Dyke, a very senior Crown official and future Lord Treasurer of Ireland, became vicar in 1435. Philip Norris, the notably controversial and outspoken Dean of St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin, was vicar here in the 1440s and 1450s.

Bishops have been enthroned here since 1536 but it was not raised to Cathedral status until 1955.

The tower clock commemorates Dean Butler, the historian of Trim. Stained glass in the West window was the first-ever stained glass designed by Edward Burne-Jones. In 1992 the cathedral was re-roofed and beams renewed in the gallery.

THIS CHURCH IS UNIQUE AS IT WAS NAMED AFTER A PUB

ADAM AND EVE TAVERN

One thing that struck me as odd is that one section of the churched is fenced off … is it to protect the organ? The organ was built by T.W. Magahy in 1936 using pipework from the old Telford organ there. It was rebuilt in 1996 by Trevor Crowe Ltd. There are around 3,000 pipes in the organ, seventy of which are gilded and incorporated in the casework. It is claimed to be the largest pipe organ in a Catholic church in Dublin and is very highly regarded. Eoin Tierney M.A., B.A. (Mus) was the first organ scholar of Adam and Eve’s Church.

Because of my Grandmother’s hobby of visiting churches, despite the fact that the she was not really religious, I have been in almost every church in Dublin including this church which she referred to as Merchant’s Quay Church. However I never entered via the Cook Street entrance until today mainly because the gate was always locked when I visited Cook Street,

The Church of the Immaculate Conception, also known as Adam and Eve’s, is a Roman Catholic church run by the Franciscans and it is located on Merchants Quay, Dublin.

During the Dissolution reign of King Henry VIII around 1540 the Friary at Francis Street, the site of the current church of St. Nicholas of Myra (Without), Francis Street, was confiscated and the community was dispersed. In 1615 a new friary was built on Cook Street. A chapel on the site was destroyed in 1619 and later rebuilt. The Franciscans secretly said Mass in the Adam and Eve Tavern, where the popular name of the present church comes from. In 1759 a newer church was built, which was later replaced by the current church.

After the Catholic Emancipation in 1829, they set about building a church and laid the foundation stone of the current church in 1834. The original design was by the architect Patrick Byrne who planned a tower on the Merchant’s Quay entrance. However due to financial problems the church was built without a nave or tower.

The church was originally dedicated to Saint Francis but in 1889 it was rededicated to the Immaculate Conception of Our Lady.

After 1900, the church was reorganised with the moving of the altar to the left wall and the original sanctuary was changed into a transept and entrance from Cook Street. A small nave was added to the right and a dome built over the sanctuary.

In 1912 a shrine to Saint Anthony was built in 1912 to designs by the architects Doolin, Butler and Donnelly.

In 1926 to celebrate the seventh centenary of Saint Francis, the friars built a circular apse, remodelled the transepts and extended the nave with an entrance to Skippers Alley. The consecration of the high altar took place on 21 September 1928 by Dr. Paschal Robinson, titular Archbishop of Tyana (1870–1948).

ST AUDOEN’S CHURCH AND ADJACENT PUBLIC PARK

CORNMARKET DUBLIN

It appears that there are at least two different spellings: St. Audeon and St. Audoen. Anyway, St Ouen (or Audoen) of Rouen (Normandy) lived in the seventh century.

St. Audeon’s Park sits alongside St. Audoen’s Church at Cornmarket in Dublin city centre. The park features Dublin’s original stone walls and the last surviving entrance to the old city (St. Audoen’s Gate).

Before the renovation, the park was not well used and was regularly closed to the public. A consultation process was carried out to determine community perception and factors that had caused the park to fail as a public space. Antisocial behaviour was the main factor which had resulted in the local school feeling that the park was unsafe for children to use.

The objective of this renovation was to give the park back to the city and community, increasing its use and revealing its presence right in the heart of the old city. Simple day-to-day concerns were addressed by design such as the removal of overshadowing vegetation locally to improve sight lines and a very generous provision of new seating. This addressed a common concern arising from consultation around the use and comfort of the park as a destination and place within which to dwell for longer periods.

By reinvigorating the park through design and breaking down obstacles to accessibility, St. Audoens Church has gained a renewed presence in the park. This has substantially increased visitor numbers which in turn renders the park safer. It also provides a beautiful setting for church ceremonies, with the park now used for wedding celebrations. The park facilitates a good balance of tourist and local visitors.

St Audoen’s Church is the church of the parish of Saint Audoen in the Church of Ireland, located south of the River Liffey at Cornmarket in Dublin, Ireland. This was close to the centre of the medieval city. The parish is in the Diocese of Dublin and Glendalough. St Audoen’s is the oldest parish church in Dublin and is still used as such. There is a Roman Catholic church of the same name adjacent to it.
