THE OWL AND FAIRY HOUSE SCULPTURE [THE STORMONT ESTATE WOODLAND TRAIL]

The Owl and Fairy House Sculpture: Stormont Estate Woodland Trail
The Stormont Estate features three distinct adventure trails, each supported by a downloadable interactive map and a themed quiz. These routes are punctuated by key marker locations and clues, providing all visitors with an educational and engaging experience in the heart of the woodland.

Anatomy of the "Owl and Fairy House" Sculpture

Positioned at the very edge of the path for easy accessibility, this sculpture invites children to touch and explore the craftsmanship. It comprises four distinct hand-carved elements:

The Sentient Owl: Perched at the top right, this owl features deep grooves to emphasise its plumage. Look closely to find the words "The Wise Owl" etched into the timber just beneath its talons.

The Multi-Storey Fairy House: On the left of the trunk is a prominent fairy dwelling, complete with a textured, shingled roof and a delicate rectangular window.

The Spiral Staircase: At the base, a set of miniature "stone" steps has been carved into the root, winding up towards an arched doorway.

The Hidden Squirrel: Tucked into a circular hollow (a natural knot in the tree) on the lower right, a small squirrel can be seen peering out at passers-by.

Materials and Preservation

The sculpture’s rich, reddish-amber hue is a hallmark of the trail. These pieces are typically carved from macrocarpa or oak and treated with teak oil or a tinted preservative. This treatment protects the wood from the damp Belfast climate and enhances the "etched" areas with deep shadows, making the details stand out beautifully for photographers.
