SIR HARRYS MALL

While photographing at this location I attracted the attention of a local gentleman who turned out to be very helpful ... for some reason, during my three day visit to Limerick, a number of people decided that I must be a photographer of some importance.

Sir Harry’s Mall was named after Sir Henry (Harry) Hartstonge in 1775 who dredged the area. Sir Henry (who was married to Lucy Pery, a sister of Edmund Sexton Pery) built the Mall after reclaiming the Foreshore. He lived in the corner house close to Baal’s Bridge.

The exact date when the Franciscans founded their friary in Limerick is unknown. According to some historians, they were founded by William de Burgho prior to 1287, by Donogh Cairbreach O'Brien before 1241 or Mary, Countess of Desmond in 1350. De Burgho was the son-in-law of Donald O'Brien. Thomas Johnson Westropp asserts that the date 1241 is in fact the correct date, with the later dates referring to times when the original building was restored. The Franciscans were located between Sir Harry's Mall and Athlunkard St. St Francis' Abbey was founded in 1279 in Goal Lane, off Mary St. but nothing remains of it today.

In April 2005 the remains of 96 human bodies were discovered as the result of excavation work in the area of Sir Harry's Mall near Baal's bridge. According to Aegis Archaeology a previously unknown graveyard outside the old city wall had been discovered and they concluded that the site was consistent with that of a cholera cemetery. It was common for those affected by the disease to buried away from the rest of the community.
