When I first photographed this in 2016 I asked some locals about this sculpture and they told me that it was the “Mermaid”. However as she has feet I knew that this information could not be correct but online many accounts refer to it as a Mermaid.
Later I discovered that the sculpture in my photograph features “Ammonite” a legendary female sea entity as a fisher holding the spiral form of the ammonite shell.
Niall O Neill, the artist responsible, is an established sculptor, living and working in Wicklow. He has built up a reputation and portfolio in the realm of public art with large scale public sculpture located around the island of Ireland.
