LOWER DOMINICK STREET MAY 2020

EMMET BRIDGE - CLANBRASSIL BRIDGE - HAROLD'S CROSS BRIDGE ]MY FIRST LONG WALK SINCE THE END OF MARCH 2020]

I have effectively been in isolation for more than a month and I have had to cancel all travel planned for this year. I had organised to visit Belfast, Cork, Limerick, Galway, Waterford, Kilkenny and Sligo. If possible I would like to visit the Waterford Walls Street Art Festival ... Due to Covid 19, a contingency plan has being put in place and new dates are coming soon.

I was a bit surprised to discover today that my mother's 25 birthday was on VE day 75 years ago. At the time she was a nurse [ward matron] living and working in London. She has never discussed her time in London in any detail. Anyway today was her 100th birthday but unfortunately because of the current health crisis we could not organise a party.

Because of the 2km restriction I was unable to visit my mother since the end of March but as the distance has been extended to 5km I decided that I would walk out to Rathgar where she currently lives. I went vis Christ Church, St. Patrick's Cathedral, Clanbrassil Street and Harold's Cross. I returned via Brighton Square, Rathmines, South Richmond Street, South Great George's Street, Dame Street and Capel Street.

I had a very vary small camera, a Sony RX0, and I took a number of photographs and this is one of them.

The name Clanbrassil Bridge, relates to James Hamilton, 2nd Earl of Clanbrassil. The more modern name of Emmet Bridge commemorates Robert Emmet and the that fact that nearby Harold’s Cross Green was a key meeting point for members of the Society of United Irishmen who carried out the 1798 Rebellion.

Robert Emmet was captured near Harold’s Cross where he lived.

My Grandmother always referred to it as Harold's Cross Bridge as do many locals today.
