EMERGENCY SERVICES IN ACTION

Limerick City and County Fire and Emergency Services Section works to create a safer society by reducing the incidence of death or injury, damage to property and environmental damage caused by fire and by other emergencies, through providing its customers with the highest quality service, delivered on time, delivered to customer specifications and in a cost-effective manner.

The Service consists of seven fire stations, based at Limerick City (Mulgrave Street), Abbeyfeale, Cappamore, Foynes, Kilmallock, Newcastelwest and Rathkeale.
The service is administered from Dooradoyle, Limerick.
The operations of the Fire and Emergency Services Section are divided into key areas including:
  • A fire brigade service which provides a fire and rescue emergency response to incidents, 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. Incident types attended include fires, road traffic accidents, flooding and other emergencies.
  • A fire prevention section, which processes fire safety certificate applications, court licensing applications, petroleum licensing applications and reviews planning application referrals.
  • An existing building inspection and enforcement function, and investigation of any fire safety complaints received.
  • A building standards section, which monitors building construction activity in the City and County, and compliance with the Building Regulations / Building Control Regulations.
  • Promoting public awareness of fire safety, and actively educating the community about fire prevention measures. In this regard the Fire Service participates in school visits, talks to community groups, and media fire safety campaigns.
  • Inspection and Enforcement in relation to Dangerous Structures / Buildings
  • A notifyable party in relation to licensing applications for Fireworks Displays and Explosive Stores.
  • Major Emergency Management, including maintaining a major emergency plan for the City and County. The Fire Service also maintains plans in relation to specified Seveso Industrial Sites.
  • A Civil Defence section that coordinates civil defence activities in both City and County.
  • A Water Safety function to help prevent loss of life through drowning in Limerick City and County.
  • Overseeing the operation of the Munster Regional Control Centre, which is the call handling and processing centre for all 999 calls in the Munster Region, and also oversees Munsters emergency communication networks.
