YORKSHIRE HOUSE [NOW THE 10 SQUARE HOTEL]

Yorkshire House in Belfast, at 10, Donegall Square South, is better known nowadays as Ten Square Hotel. It is in a prime location, opposite the rear entrance to the City Hall.

The first thing that you may notice is that it is Donegall rather than Donegal but I will not discuss this here.

Yorkshire house was originally built in 1863 as Jaffe Brothers’ linen warehouse. Its exterior features carved portholes, with the faces of famous people such as George Washington, Isaac Newton, Michelangelo and William Shakespeare protruding.

On previous visits I have tried to photograph all of the portholes but my view was obstructed for various reasons. This time I also had problems in that some very drunk wedding guests kept jumping in front of the camera.

One thing that surprised my about Belfast was the amount of on-the-street drinking.
