UPDATE: CONQUERED TIDE BY KAT ENNIS
CONQUERED TIDE BY KAT ENNIS [AT LAST I FOUND SOME INFORMATION ABOUT THIS]
Today 23 November 2024 I was provided with information relating to this example of Paint-A-Box street art. Photographed August 2017.
Artist: Kat Ennis
Artwork title: 'Conquered Tide'
ocation: Alfie Byrne Road, Clontarf Road, Dublin 3
Year: 2017
Council: Dublin City Council
Artwork description:
"Conquered Tide" is a piece of artwork that I hope portrays a part of Dublin that for many is an area one comes to get away from the city, a place of bracing winds and solitude - also, a place that many people see for the first time viewing from the ferries coming across the Irish Sea. I used to go and watch the ferries come in from the bull wall as a child, the pigeon towers were like an anchor pulling them in across the water, welcoming those on board." - Kat Ennis
About the Artist:
Kat Ennis is an Irish installation artist living just outside of Dublin. With an Honours Degree in Fine Art from IT Sligo, she works across various mediums, from portraiture and line drawings to large-scale installations and graphic pieces. She has also contributed work to the Incognito show in aid of The Jack and Jill Foundation.
Finding the Artwork:
This painted utility box can be found at Alfi Byrne Road along Clontarf Road in Dublin 3. It offers a unique perspective on the coastal landscape, capturing the feeling of the sea and the arrival of ferries into Dublin port.
STREET ART 2017 - PAINTED CABINET AT ALFI BYRNE ROAD CLONTARF [WELCOME - FAILTE]
Street Art and Unexpected Encounters in Clontarf
I stumbled upon this lovely painted cabinet in Clontarf, and it turns out there's a story behind it! A local gentleman told me it was painted by a young schoolgirl from County Meath. We got chatting about the Dublin Canvas project – he even showed me his own impressive artwork proposal!
THE SONY FE 28-70 F2 GM
LAUNCHED 19 NOVEMBER 2024
Sony FE 28-70mm F2 GM: A Beast with a Bite
The Sony FE 28-70mm F2 GM is a lens that commands attention. It's a hefty, premium optic that promises exceptional image quality and a constant f/2 aperture throughout its zoom range. While it delivers on those promises, it also comes with a hefty price tag and a slightly unconventional focal range that might leave some photographers feeling a bit shortchanged.
What's to Love:
Image Quality: This lens is sharp. Seriously sharp. Even wide open at f/2, images are crisp and detailed across the frame. Distortion, chromatic aberration, and vignetting are all well-controlled, resulting in images that are clean and ready for prime time.
Constant f/2 Aperture: This is a huge boon for low-light shooting and for creating shallow depth of field effects. It allows you to isolate your subject and create beautiful bokeh.
Build Quality: The lens feels solid and well-made. It's weather-sealed, so you can confidently shoot in challenging conditions.
Autofocus: The autofocus is fast and accurate, making it a great choice for capturing action and moving subjects.
Points of Contention:
28-70mm Focal Range: This is where some photographers might hesitate. The traditional 24-70mm range is a staple for its versatility, and the lack of those extra 4mm at the wide end might be limiting for landscape or real estate photography.
Price: There's no getting around it, this lens is expensive. It's aimed at professionals and serious enthusiasts who demand the best, but it's definitely a significant investment.
Why the Grumbles?
The 28-70mm focal range is a deliberate choice by Sony. It allowed them to create a lens that is smaller, lighter, and potentially cheaper than a 24-70mm f/2 would have been. However, for many photographers, those extra 4mm at the wide end are crucial. 24mm allows for more expansive landscapes, more inclusive group shots, and greater flexibility in tight spaces.
The high price tag is also a sticking point. While the lens delivers exceptional performance, it's priced beyond the reach of many photographers. This is especially true when you consider that there are excellent 24-70mm f/2.8 lenses available for significantly less money.
Alternatives:
If the 28-70mm focal range or the price of the Sony GM lens are dealbreakers, here are some alternatives to consider:
Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II: This lens offers the classic 24-70mm focal range and excellent image quality, albeit with a slightly slower maximum aperture. It's also more affordable than the f/2 GM.
Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2: This is a great third-party option that offers a similar focal range and a fast f/2.8 aperture at a more competitive price.
Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art: Another excellent third-party lens with a 24-70mm focal range and a reputation for outstanding image quality.
Ultimately, the Sony FE 28-70mm F2 GM is a fantastic lens that delivers exceptional image quality and performance. However, its unconventional focal range and high price tag might not be for everyone. Carefully consider your needs and budget before making a decision.
MAOI SCULPTURE IN CLONTARF [REPLICA OF ONE OF THE EASTER ISLAND STATUES]
The "MAOI" sculpture in Clontarf is a replica of one of the iconic Moai statues found on Easter Island, a Chilean territory in the Pacific Ocean. It was presented to the City of Dublin by the Government of Chile in November 2004 as a symbol of friendship and cultural exchange between the two nations.
Meaning and Significance
Moai: The Moai are monolithic human figures carved by the Rapa Nui people of Easter Island between the 13th and 16th centuries. They represent ancestors and deities and were believed to possess spiritual power.
Symbolism: The gift of the Maoi to Dublin signifies a connection between two geographically distant cultures with a shared appreciation for heritage and artistry. It also serves as a reminder of Chile's Polynesian heritage and its unique cultural identity.
Cultural Exchange: The presentation of the sculpture fostered cultural exchange and understanding between Ireland and Chile, promoting awareness of each other's history and traditions.
The Sculpture
Replica: The Clontarf Maoi is a faithful replica of an original Easter Island head, carved from volcanic stone sourced from the island itself.
Artist: It was sculpted by Chilean artist Alejandro Pakarati, a member of the Rapa Nui community, ensuring authenticity in its creation.
Location: The sculpture is prominently positioned on the promenade at Clontarf, near Vernon Avenue, making it a recognisable landmark in the area.
SONY A1 MkII
NEW CAMERA LAUNCHED 19 NOVEMBER 2024
Sony just announced the Alpha 1 II, and it's generating a lot of buzz in the photography world. Here's a summary of what I know so far:
Key Features and Improvements:
Enhanced AI Processing: A new AI processing unit allows for significantly improved subject recognition and autofocus. This translates to:
30% improvement in eye detection for animals and humans.
50% boost in bird eye detection.
Faster Sensor Readout: This enables features like:
240 fps refresh rate in the electronic viewfinder (EVF) for smoother tracking.
"Pre-Capture" to capture moments before the shutter button is fully pressed.
"Speed Boost" for faster continuous shooting speeds.
Improved Image Quality: Expect better colour and noise handling, especially in JPEGs.
Upgraded Video Capabilities: The Alpha 1 II includes:
Support for importing and monitoring LUTs (Look-Up Tables) for more control over video colour grading.
Enhanced Design and Ergonomics: Sony has taken cues from the Alpha 9 III, resulting in:
A more comfortable grip.
An improved shutter button.
A new fully articulating screen.
An additional custom button (C5).
Improved In-Body Image Stabilisation: Up to 8.5 stops of stabilisation in the centre.
Why it Matters:
The original Alpha 1 was already a groundbreaking camera, pushing the boundaries of speed and resolution. This second generation builds upon that foundation, refining existing features and adding new ones based on user feedback. It seems like Sony is aiming to solidify its position at the top of the full-frame mirrorless camera market.
Who is it for?
The Alpha 1 II is clearly targeted at professional photographers and videographers who demand the absolute best in terms of performance, image quality, and versatility. This includes:
Sports and wildlife photographers who need high-speed shooting and exceptional autofocus.
Wedding and portrait photographers who require high resolution and reliable performance.
Videographers who want a camera capable of capturing high-quality footage with advanced features.
THE BLACK CHURCH
THERE IS LOT GOING ON IN THE AREA
ST MARY'S KNOWN AS THE BLACK CHURCH [LOTS GOING ON IN THE IMMEDIATE AREA AND THE BUS SERVICES WILL CHANGE IN DECEMBER]
The Black Church at St. Mary's Place has a fascinating story associated with it, and the "blackness" is related to rain.
The Legend of the Devil:
Local legend has it that if you walk around the Black Church three times anti-clockwise at the stroke of midnight, you will encounter the Devil himself!
This legend likely stems from a combination of factors:
The church's dark and somewhat foreboding appearance, especially at night.
Its association with death and burial (being a former church).
A general human fascination with the supernatural and the macabre.
Whether or not you believe in the Devil, the legend adds an air of mystery and intrigue to the Black Church. It's a fun piece of folklore that has been passed down through generations of Dubliners.
The "Blackness" and the Rain:
The church's nickname comes from the calp limestone used in its construction. This type of limestone has a high iron content, which reacts with rainwater to create a dark, almost black appearance. So, the church is at its "blackest" when it's wet! This unique characteristic adds to its visual impact and contributes to its somewhat eerie atmosphere.
There are also stories of a ghostly woman in white who is said to haunt the church. This is linked to a tale of a woman who took her own life there after being jilted by her lover.
The church's unusual parabolic arches are a distinctive architectural feature, and they contribute to the building's unique character.
The immediate area is undergoing massive change. There was a derelict site beside the Church on Paradise Place but it has been redeveloped as the Node Student Accommodation Complex.
The nearby St Mary's Place and Dorset Street flats are in the process of being demolished. The redevelopment will greatly impact on the lower section of Upper Dominick Street.
The well known T O'Brennan's Pub which claimed to be the oldest Georgian Pub in Dublin ceased trading many years ago and remains unoccupied.
Many of the bus routes serving the immediate area will cease in December to be replaced by two high frequency services
E1 Route:
Route: Northwood - DCU - City Centre - Bray - Ballywaltrim
Frequency:
Daytime (6 AM - 10 PM): Every 8-10 minutes
Nighttime (12 Midnight - 6 AM): Every hour
Replaces: Routes 4 and 155
Broadstone Bus Stops: Will serve the Broadstone stop.
Western Way Bus Stops: Will NOT serve Western Way.
Key Features:
Connects Northwood, DCU, and the city centre with Bray and Ballywaltrim.
Provides frequent daytime service and a 24-hour link along this corridor.
Offers an alternative to the Dart for travel between the city centre and Bray.
E2 Route:
Route: Ballymun (IKEA) - DCU - City Centre - Dún Laoghaire
Frequency:
Daytime (6 AM - 10 PM): Every 8-10 minutes
Nighttime (12 Midnight - 6 AM): Every hour
Replaces: Parts of routes 4 and 155
Broadstone Bus Stops: Will serve the Broadstone stop.
Western Way Bus Stops: Will NOT serve Western Way.
Key Features:
Connects Ballymun and DCU with the city centre and Dún Laoghaire.
Provides frequent daytime service and a 24-hour link along this corridor.
Offers a new direct link between Dún Laoghaire and DCU.
Route 19 (Dublin Airport):
Route: Dublin Airport - DCU - Parnell Square (City Centre)
Frequency:
Daytime (5 AM - 11 PM): Every 20 minutes
Key Features:
Provides a direct link between Dublin Airport and the city centre.
Offers a frequent service for airport travellers.
Other Important Changes:
Local (L) and Express (X) Routes: New L and X routes will be introduced to provide better connectivity for areas like Greystones, Newcastle, and Blackrock. These routes are designed to offer faster journeys to the city centre and nearby stations with fewer transfers.
Changes to Routes 4, 11, and 13: These routes will undergo significant changes as part of the network redesign.
Discontinued Routes: A number of routes will be discontinued, including the 46a, 46e, 63, 63a, 84, 84a, 84x, 143, 144, 145, 155, 184, and 185.
Here's what I can deduce about Western Way bus services after December 8th:
Route 4: With Route 4 diverting at O'Connell Bridge, it will definitely NO LONGER serve Western Way. This confirms that the E1 and E2 are NOT replacements for Route 4 on the Western Way section.
Route 11: The new Route 11 routing via Phibsborough also means it will NO LONGER serve Western Way.
Route 13: Terminating at Mountjoy Square means Route 13 will also NO LONGER serve Western Way.
Conclusion: It seems very likely that NO current routes will continue to serve Western Way after the December 8th changes.
This is a significant change for people who rely on those stops. It highlights the importance of checking the Dublin Bus and TFI websites for detailed information about alternative travel options.
Recommendations for people who use the Western Way stops:
Use the TFI Journey Planner: Enter your starting point and destination as a Western Way stop to see what alternative routes and connections are available after December 8th.
Check the Dublin Bus website: Look for updated route maps and timetables to understand how the changes affect your journey.
Consider nearby stops: Identify alternative bus stops on nearby roads that will still be served by buses after the changes.
THE OLD FIRE STATION ON DORSET STREET [NOW FULLY REVEALED IN ALL ITS GLORY]
The Old Fire Station on Dorset Street: A Restored Gem Revealed
I'm currently dedicating a significant amount of my time to documenting Dublin's architectural heritage, capturing images of old buildings before they potentially vanish. This has become particularly crucial now that Dublin appears to be entering a new development boom, which could lead to the disappearance of many historic landmarks.
One building that recently caught my attention is the old fire station on Dorset Street. For years, it was obscured by the Dorset Street Flats and Mary's Place Flats, a large complex of social housing that had unfortunately become a hub for anti-social behaviour. Thankfully, these flats are now being demolished, with the final stages of this process nearing completion. This demolition has finally revealed the fire station in its entirety, offering a fantastic opportunity to photograph it before it becomes integrated into its new, modern surroundings.
Interestingly, it took me a decade to uncover the history of this building. My initial misconception that it was located on Bolton Street rather than Dorset Street, despite living in the immediate area for 21 years, highlights how easily we can overlook familiar surroundings.
The building is a handsome fire station designed by the renowned city architect, C.J. McCarthy, in 1901. It was one of a series of fire stations designed by McCarthy throughout Dublin, with others located on Thomas Street, Tara Street, and Buckingham Street. None of these buildings remain in use as fire stations today. The Dorset Street fire station is particularly noteworthy as it is set to be incorporated into the new development planned for the site, ensuring its preservation for future generations.
Additional Information:
C.J. McCarthy: Charles J. McCarthy was a prominent Dublin City Architect in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He designed numerous significant public buildings in Dublin, including fire stations, libraries, and schools. His work often featured a distinctive blend of Victorian and Edwardian architectural styles.
Dorset Street Flats Redevelopment: The redevelopment of the Dorset Street and Mary's Place Flats site is a major urban renewal project by Dublin City Council. The project aims to provide 163 new social housing units, along with community spaces. The inclusion of the old fire station within the new development is a positive example of how historical preservation can be integrated into modern urban planning.
Property Booms and Crashes in Dublin: Dublin has experienced several cycles of property booms and busts in recent decades. The Celtic Tiger boom of the late 1990s and early 2000s saw rapid property price inflation, followed by a dramatic crash in 2008. The current development boom is driven by a combination of factors, including economic growth, population increase, and a shortage of housing supply.
DORSET STREET FLATS
ALMOST TOTALLY DEMOLISHED BY 15 NOVEMBER 2024
THE CURRENT STATE OF DORSET STREET FLATS AND ST MARY'S PLACE FLATS [ALMOST TOTALLY DEMOLISHED 15 NOVEMBER 2024]
I last addressed this subject in March 2024 but today I was surprised that all blocks have been demolished (more or less) because I had believed that the block on Upper Dominick Street was to be renovated rather than replaced.
Dorset Street Flats Redevelopment: A New Chapter Begins
The Dorset Street and St Mary's Place flats complex in Dublin's north inner city is undergoing a significant transformation. After years of planning and preparation, the demolition of the existing 1960s-era flats is now complete, making way for a modern and vibrant community.
Project Goals:
This redevelopment project aims to:
Provide 163 new homes: A mix of houses, duplexes, and apartments to meet the diverse housing needs of the community.
Improve the urban environment: Create a safer, more inclusive, and attractive space with high-quality public areas, landscaped streets, and play spaces.
Enhance community well-being: Incorporate community facilities, a crèche, a commercial unit, and a cafe to foster social interaction and support local residents.
Timeline:
Demolition: Completed as of November 2024.
Construction Start: Expected to commence shortly.
Estimated Completion: Q4 2026.
Key Project Features:
Two enclosed courtyards: A modern design approach to promote safety and community interaction.
Mix of housing types and sizes: Caters to a variety of households.
Sustainable design: Incorporates energy-efficient measures to reduce environmental impact.
Challenges and Considerations:
The project has faced challenges, including:
Relocating existing residents: Ensuring that all residents were provided with suitable alternative accommodation before demolition.
Addressing anti-social behaviour: The site experienced anti-social behaviour during the de-tenanting process, highlighting the need for ongoing community support and safety measures.
Meeting sustainability targets: Balancing the need for new housing with EU directives on whole-life carbon emissions in construction.
Looking Ahead:
The Dorset Street Flats redevelopment represents a significant investment in Dublin's north inner city. By replacing outdated and problematic housing with a modern, well-designed community, this project promises to improve the lives of residents and contribute to the ongoing revitalisation of the area.
MEETING BY PAT LOUGHRAN
BECKETT WAY PARK WEST DUBLIN
This striking sculpture, titled "Meeting", was created by Irish artist Pat Loughran. Selected from the final year of sculpture students at the National College of Art and Design, Loughran was commissioned to create a site-specific work for Park West.
Standing at an impressive 3 metres tall, "Meeting" is formed from polished aluminium, its reflective surface mirroring the surrounding environment. This creates a dynamic interaction between the viewer, the sculpture, and the business park itself, symbolising the coming together of people and ideas. The sculpture is mounted on a white concrete plinth, which provides a clean, minimalist base and allows the reflective qualities of the aluminium to take centre stage.
While I couldn't find specific details about the artist Pat Loughran beyond this commission, the sculpture is clearly influenced by Minimalism, an art movement that emerged in the 1960s and emphasised simple geometric forms and industrial materials. The use of polished aluminium and the abstract form of "Meeting" are characteristic of this style.
The location of the sculpture in Park West, a major business park in Dublin, is also significant. It suggests a connection between the artwork and the world of commerce, perhaps reflecting on themes of collaboration, innovation, and growth.

The iconic Volkswagen Type 2, better known as the VW Bus, Microbus, Kombi, or simply, the "VW van." This vehicle has a rich history and a dedicated following around the globe.
Here's a breakdown of its history and different names:
Origins (1940s): Dutch VW importer Ben Pon envisioned a versatile vehicle based on the Beetle, sketching his idea in 1947. This led to the development of the Type 2.
First Generation (T1, 1950-1967): Launched with a split windshield (hence the nickname "Splittie"), it quickly gained popularity for its practicality and charming design. It was offered in various configurations, including the Kombi (passenger and cargo), Microbus (passenger), and panel van.
Second Generation (T2, 1967-1979): The "Bay Window" model featured a larger, single-piece windshield and more interior space. It became a symbol of the counter-culture movement in the 1960s and '70s.
Third Generation (T3, 1979-1992): A more angular design with improved aerodynamics and engines. It was marketed as the Vanagon in North America.
Fourth Generation (T4, 1990-2003): A significant departure with a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout. It was known as the Eurovan in North America.
Fifth Generation (T5, 2003-2015): Evolutionary design with more modern features and engine options.
Sixth Generation (T6, 2015-present): The latest iteration with updated styling, technology, and safety features.
Different Names:
Bulli (Germany): A combination of "Bus" and "Lieferwagen" (delivery van).
Kombi (Brazil, Portugal, and other countries): Short for "Kombinationsfahrzeug" (combination vehicle).
Microbus (Many countries): A common term used globally.
Transporter (Europe): Often used for the commercial van versions.
Samba (Some markets): Refers to the deluxe version with extra windows and a sunroof.
Why was it so popular?
Iconic Design: The VW Bus has a timeless and instantly recognisable design.
Versatility: It can be used for everything from family trips to camping adventures to hauling cargo.
Durability: Known for its robust construction and reliable engines.
Cultural Impact: Its association with the counter-culture movement and surf culture cemented its place in history.
Replacements:
While the VW Bus continues to evolve, there have been attempts at spiritual successors:
VW ID. Buzz (2022-present): An all-electric reimagining of the classic Microbus, capturing the original's spirit with modern technology.
Various Camper Van Conversions: Companies continue to convert VW vans and other vehicles into modern camper vans, carrying on the legacy of the classic VW camper.
The ID. Buzz has generated excitement and strong early sales, suggesting a successful continuation of the VW Bus legacy. However, the original T1 and T2 models remain highly sought-after classics, with a devoted following that keeps their spirit alive.
THE SONY A1 II
WILL BE ANNOUNCED ON THE 19TH NOVEMBER 2024
SONY CONTACTED ME TO TELL ME THAT THEY WILL LAUNCH THE SONY A1 II ON THE 19TH NOVEMBER 2024
A friend said to me in a text message "You're facing a delightful dilemma—a trifecta of tempting Sony cameras!"
Next week Sony will introduce the A1 MkII camera body. I have had every Sony A7R except for the A7RV which I decided to skip as I was happy with my A7RIV. I had decided that my next upgrade would be the Sony A1 or what ever replaced this flagship camera however in order to complicate life for me Sony recently introduced the A9III which I have considered but could not fund until sometime in 2025.
I will most likely get the new version of the A1 as it is rumoured that it will be based on the newer 9 MkIII body rather than the Original A1.
Let's discuss why anyone might choose each one, and then tackle the flagship vs. faster upgrade cycle question.
Why choose the Sony A1 (or A1 Mark II)?
The "do-it-all" flagship: It excels in almost every area: high resolution (50MP+), blazing fast continuous shooting (30fps), incredible autofocus, 8K video, and robust build. The rumoured A1 II is expected to build on this with even better performance, possibly incorporating features from the A9 III. This is your camera if you want the absolute best and don't want to compromise on any feature.
Ideal for: Hybrid shooters who need both high-resolution stills and top-tier video capabilities; wildlife and sports photographers who demand speed and autofocus precision; landscape photographers who crave detail.
Why choose the Sony A9 III?
Speed demon: Built for action, the A9 III boasts a stacked sensor with a global shutter, eliminating rolling shutter distortion and enabling incredible burst shooting speeds (up to 120fps). Its autofocus system is lightning-fast and tenacious, making it ideal for capturing the most unpredictable subjects.
Ideal for: Sports and wildlife photographers who need the absolute fastest capture speeds and the most reliable autofocus; those shooting fast-action events where rolling shutter is a concern.
Why choose the Sony A7RV?
Resolution king: Boasting a 61MP sensor, the A7RV offers the highest resolution in Sony's Alpha lineup. It also features improved autofocus and in-body image stabilisation.
Ideal for: Landscape, studio, and commercial photographers who prioritise resolution and detail; those who need to make large prints or crop heavily.
Flagship vs. Faster Upgrade Cycle
This is a classic debate, and the answer depends on needs and budget:
Flagship (like the A1):
Pros:
Longer lifespan: Cutting-edge technology means it will remain relevant for longer.
Best performance: No compromises on features or quality.
Higher resale value: Flagships tend to hold their value better.
Cons:
Higher initial cost: A significant investment upfront.
Faster Upgrade Cycle (A7R series):
Pros:
Lower initial cost: More affordable entry point.
Access to newer tech more frequently: Always have relatively up-to-date features.
Cons:
Higher total cost of ownership over time: Repeated purchases add up.
Potentially shorter lifespan: May become outdated more quickly.
Lower resale value: Newer models depreciate the older ones faster.
WAVE BY ANGELA CONNER
AN IMPRESSIVE EXAMPLE OF PUBLIC ART IN PARK WEST DUBLIN
I have fact-checked the information provided in various accounts and corrected the height of the sculpture, which is 39.3 metres, not 35.3 metres as sometimes reported.
Park West in Dublin is home to a striking piece of public art: Wave, a towering sculpture by renowned English artist Angela Conner FRBS. Standing at a remarkable 39.3 metres (129 feet), it claims the title of Europe's tallest wind and water mobile sculpture.
Crafted from polystyrene coated in layers of carbon resin, Wave's elegant form is anchored to a 7.6 metre (25 foot) deep pit filled with 9.5 tonnes of lead. This ingenious design allows the sculpture to gracefully sway and respond to the wind, creating a captivating spectacle of movement and balance.
Angela Conner, a celebrated sculptor with a global presence, is known for her dynamic works that often incorporate natural elements like wind and water. Her impressive portfolio includes large-scale sculptures displayed in public and private collections worldwide.
Interestingly, the initial inspiration for Wave came from observing saplings in Vermont. Conner was fascinated by their ability to bend and sway in the wind while always returning to their centre, a concept she found both visually and philosophically compelling.
Did you know? At the base of the sculpture, jets of water create a delicate spray that, when caught by the sunlight, produces a shimmering rainbow. This adds another dimension to the artwork, further connecting it to the natural world.
I PLAN TO PURCHASE A MAC M4 PRO MINI
IN DECEMBER I HOPE TO OBTAIN A M4 PRO MAC MINI [AS A TESTBED TO EXPERIMENT WITH APPLE INTELLIGENCE]
My Apple 27 inch iMac is getting old and the latest OS upgrade/update to Sosoma could well be the last so I am planning to upgrade my equipment towards the end of 2025 however the introduction of the new Apple M4 mini has impacted on my plans and I suspect that I will end up switching to Apple Minis rather than Studios which are much more expensive.
I had more-or-less decided the get the Mini with the base M4 chip but as I now realise that the M4 Pro is in a different league I have no real option but to get a M4 Pro version with 24G of RAM and 1TB of internal SSD ... this is discussed in a bit more detail below. I had considered the 2T option but uplift in price is more than I am willing to pay at this stage.

The Wellington Monument in Phoenix Park, a towering obelisk marking the Dublin skyline, stands as a somewhat ironic tribute to Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington. While intended to celebrate his victory at Waterloo and Irish roots, the project was met with lukewarm public support and beset by delays and funding issues. This lack of enthusiasm stemmed from Wellington's waning popularity in Ireland due to his political stance against Catholic Emancipation, alongside funding difficulties and the monument's relocation to a less central location.
Ironically, the monument is associated with two contrasting anecdotes that capture the complex relationship between Wellington and his homeland. The first, often recounted with a chuckle, involves a stable built on site to house the horse for the planned equestrian statue. When funds ran dry, leaving the stable empty, Wellington quipped, "If they cannot afford the horse, they can afford the stable." This story, though popular in Dublin, highlights the financial woes that plagued the monument's construction and the eventual abandonment of the statue.
Far more widely known, however, is the biting remark by Daniel O'Connell, a leading figure in the fight for Catholic Emancipation: "The poor old duke, what shall I say of him? To be sure he was born in Ireland, but being born in a stable does not make a man a horse." O'Connell, a champion of Catholic Emancipation and a towering figure in Irish history, crafted a retort that resonated deeply with those who felt betrayed by Wellington's political stance. This quote, deeply ingrained in Irish historical memory, underscores the complexities of Wellington's legacy in Ireland, where admiration for his military achievements is often tempered by his political actions.
In contrast to the Dublin monument, the Wellington Monument in Trim, County Meath, enjoyed significant local support. This stemmed from Wellington's strong personal ties to the town, where he spent his formative years and served as a member of Parliament. Funded and championed by the local community, the Trim monument, a more modest bronze statue atop a column, reflects a sense of local pride and ownership absent in the Dublin project.
The contrasting stories associated with the Dublin monument, one humorous and the other pointedly critical, offer a glimpse into the complexities of commemorating historical figures whose legacies are intertwined with political and social tensions. These contrasting narratives, alongside the differing receptions of the Dublin and Trim monuments, paint a nuanced picture of Wellington's legacy in Ireland, one marked by both admiration and resentment.
THE MAC STUDIO
IS NO LONGER AN OPTION BECAUSE OF THE MAC MINI
I WAS PLANNING TO PURCHASE A MAC STUDIO BEFORE CHRISTMAS [BUT I HAVE CHANGED MY MIND]
I have hit on a key point of confusion in the current Mac lineup! With the impressive performance of the M4 Mac mini, it does make one wonder why someone would opt for the more expensive Mac Studio.
Here's a breakdown of the remaining reasons to consider a Mac Studio in 2024, along with some rumours about future updates:
Why Choose Mac Studio in 2024?
M2 Ultra Chip: The Mac Studio offers the M2 Ultra chip, which is currently the most powerful chip in Apple's lineup. While the M4 Pro in the Mac mini is incredibly capable, the M2 Ultra still holds the edge for the most demanding workflows, like high-end video editing, 3D rendering, and complex simulations.
Expanded Connectivity: The Mac Studio provides more ports than the Mac mini, including 10Gb Ethernet, more Thunderbolt 4 ports, and an SD card slot on the front. This can be crucial for professionals who need to connect a wide array of peripherals.
Upgradability (sort of): While the Mac Studio's RAM isn't user-upgradable, it can be configured with up to 192GB of unified memory at the time of purchase. This provides headroom for future-proofing, especially for memory-intensive tasks.
Form Factor: Some users might prefer the larger, more expandable form factor of the Mac Studio. It offers more flexibility for placing it on a desk and connecting peripherals.
Rumors of Future Mac Studio Updates:
M4 Ultra and M4 Max: Rumors suggest that Apple is working on an updated Mac Studio featuring the M4 Max and a yet-to-be-announced M4 Ultra chip. These chips are expected to deliver a significant performance boost over the current M2 generation.
Release Timeline: Speculation points to a potential release of the M4 Mac Studio sometime in 2025, possibly around mid-year or later.

Connectivity: The base models come with two Thunderbolt 4 ports, while the higher-end configurations offer two Thunderbolt 4 ports and two additional USB-C ports. Crucially, none of the new iMacs feature Thunderbolt 5, which is a surprising omission considering its inclusion in the new Mac mini. Thunderbolt 5 offers significant advantages, including a massive increase in bandwidth (up to 120 Gbps) and the ability to drive more displays at higher resolutions. This limitation might be a deal-breaker for some, especially those looking for a future-proof machine.
The Missing Larger Screen: A Source of Frustration
While the 24-inch iMac is a fantastic machine, many users, including professionals and creatives, were hoping for a larger screen option. A 27-inch or even a 30/32-inch iMac would offer a more immersive experience and increased screen real estate for multitasking. The lack of a larger model is a puzzling decision by Apple, especially considering the growing demand for larger displays in the professional space.
Why Upgrade Now?
If you're still using an older Intel-based iMac, now is an excellent time to consider upgrading to the M4 model. Here's why:
Performance Boost:
The M4 chip offers a significant performance leap over older Intel processors, resulting in a smoother and more responsive computing experience.
Improved Efficiency: The M4 chip is incredibly power efficient, leading to longer battery life (if you have an iMac Pro) and a cooler, quieter machine.
Future-Proofing (with caveats): While the lack of Thunderbolt 5 is a drawback, the M4 iMac is still a powerful and capable machine that will serve you well for years to come. Plus, the 10-core GPU configuration can support a single 8K external display at 60Hz, offering an incredible level of detail and screen real estate.
In conclusion, the new M4 iMac is a fantastic all-in-one computer that offers a compelling blend of performance, design, and value. However, the lack of a larger screen option is a disappointment for many. If you're in the market for a new iMac and can live with the 24-inch display, the M4 model is an excellent choice. But if you need a larger screen, you might have to look elsewhere or wait and see if Apple addresses this omission in future releases.
Let's delve deeper into the M4 chip and explore some alternatives for those needing a larger display. I'm also happy to help you with your future blog posts about the new Mac mini and MacBook Pro.

SONY FX30
RECENT FIRMWARE UPDATE WAS WITHDRAWN
SONY FX30 [RECENT FIRMWARE UPDATE WAS WITHDRAWN]
What is Shutter Angle?
Shutter angle is a way of controlling the amount of motion blur in your video. It's a concept that originates from film cameras where a rotating shutter with an opening (measured in degrees) controlled the exposure time.
A wider shutter angle (e.g., 360 degrees) results in a longer exposure and more motion blur, creating a smoother, more cinematic look.
A narrower shutter angle (e.g., 90 degrees) results in a shorter exposure and less motion blur, creating a sharper, more staccato look.
The key advantage of using shutter angle instead of shutter speed is that it maintains a consistent look for motion blur regardless of your frame rate. For example, a 180-degree shutter angle will always result in a shutter speed that's half the frame rate (e.g., 1/48 second for 24fps, 1/240 second for 120fps). This ensures consistent motion blur even when you change frame rates.
Here's the rewritten response with the corrected information:
