THE OLD HOUSE AT 34 MAIN STREET

A LARGE UNOCCUPIED BUILDING IN CAPELIZOD

The house was in better condition when I photographed it in 2018 but it may not be as bad as it appears to be in my photographs.

The privately owned property at 34 Main Street, dates back to the 1730s, but it is claimed by some that neglect has led to collapse of the building’s internal floors.

The structure is described by the National Inventory Of Architectural Heritage as follows: “A well proportioned early Georgian house occupying a prominent location in Chapelizod, contributing to its eclectic character, and one of the earliest houses remaining in the village. Its close proximity to the church and picturesque churchyard, and the narrow lanes which bound it to either side, contribute to its setting and context. 34 Main Street was immortalised in “The House by the Churchyard” (1863) by Joseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu (1814-73).”

THE RAIN WAS INTENSE AT TIMES

If you examine some of the images in this series you should see the rain showers sweeping from right to left.

The last time I was in the area I explored the Causeway, the Bull Island and Dollymount Strand but today because of the rain this was not possible to visit the area which is what I had planned to do. I will try again later in the month, all going well. And even though I did not visit Bull Island I am taking this opportunity to provide some history and information which may be of interest.

The North Bull Island just 10kms northeast from Dublin City Centre. From Clontarf you can walk over on foot via either the wooden bridge or Causeway Road. In case you are concerned the causeway crossing isn’t tidal, so you won’t get stuck on the island.

In times past, Dublin Bay had a long-running problem with silting, notably at the mouth of the River Liffey. After years of primitive dredging, an attempt to maintain a clear channel more effectively was begun when, in 1715, the first piles were driven of what was to become the Great South Wall, completed in 1730. This barrier was breached by storm action some years later, and in 1761, a stone pier was commenced, working from the Poolbeg Lighthouse (1768), back to shore, the construction of massive granite blocks being completed in 1795. It was during this period that the building of a North Bull Wall was also proposed, and when it was seen that the South Wall did not solve the silting problem, the authorities responsible for Dublin Port commissioned studies on the matter. Captain William Bligh, of Bounty fame, surveyed Dublin Bay for the Ballast Board in 1801, highlighting the potential of the North Bull sandbank. Its purpose was to clear a sandbar by Venturi action.

A wooden bridge, the first Bull Bridge, was erected in 1819 to facilitate the construction of a stone wall, based on a design by Ballast Board engineer, George Halpin. Started in 1820, the Bull Wall was completed in 1825, at a cost of £95,000.

Over the succeeding 48 years, the natural tidal effects created by the walls deepened the entry to the Liffey from 1.8 m to 4.8 m. Much of the silt now scoured from the river course was deposited on the North Bull, and a true island began to emerge, with people venturing out to the growing beach. The volume of visitors was increased by the commencement of horse tram services to Clontarf in 1873, and further by the laying of a full tram line to Howth, opening in 1900, with stops in the Clontarf / Dollymount area, and a Coast Guard station was built at the landward end of the Bull Wall.

The island continued to grow in extent, from the Bull Wall towards Howth Head. In addition to picnics and swimming, the island was used for shooting practice, and in 1880, an international rifle match between Ireland and the USA was held there, with an audience numbering several thousand. In 1889, the Royal Dublin Golf Club, then located at Sutton, sought and received the permission of Colonel Vernon and the Dublin Port and Docks Board to lay out a golf course at the city end of the island and construct a clubhouse.

Sometime in the early 20th century, a track suitable for walking and handcarts, running from a slipway at the point where the Howth Road comes from Raheny’s village centre down to the coast, was formed. Usable at low tide, this 150m track allowed access to the island for leisure and beachcombing (timber, coal and other items lost overboard from ships accessing Dublin Port were washed up on the island’s strand).

Between 1906 and 1907, a new Bull Bridge was constructed – it is still standing. Then, in 1912, the Dollymount Sea Scouts (9th Dublin (2nd Port of Dublin)) was formed, taking part of the disused Coast Guard station as their den (“Crow’s Nest”) – the troop continues to operate from there, now called 5th Port Dollymount.

The British Army commandeered the whole island on 5 September 1914, for military training – primarily as a firing range but also for trench warfare practice. The Royal Dublin Golf Club clubhouse was used as officers’ quarters and considerable damage was done to the building and, particularly due to trench warfare practice, the island environment as a whole. Late in this period, three local people started to dig golf holes at the Raheny end of the island, and after discussions with the Royal Dublin, and with Lady Ardilaun, formed a new golf club, named, in honour of the Guinness estate, St. Anne’s. The first drive-in at what was a nine-hole course until 1989, took place on 1 July 1921.

In 1931, a plan was proposed to develop the island and the waters between it and the coast. Called the “Blue Lagoon Scheme,” this would have included dams and sluices at the Wooden Bridge and Sutton Channel, maintaining a high water level behind the island, which itself might hold some housing or tourism facilities. Further plans were advanced by Bord Failte, including the conversion of much of the island into a theme park.

In 1931 Dublin Corporation was convinced by campaigners like the Jesuit ornithologist Fr. Patrick G. Kennedy SJ (1881–1966), who wrote An Irish Sanctuary – Birds of the North Bull (1953), to apply for Bull Island to be made a sanctuary by the government.

AS I WALKED ALONG JAMES LARKIN ROAD

I must admit that I did not know that this was James Larkin Road until today.

James Larkin Road was renamed in 1949. The road was originally called the Clongriffin Road (I have been unable to fully verify this), but it was renamed after James Larkin in recognition of his contributions to the Irish Labour Movement.

HENRIETTA PLACE AND HENRIETTA STREET

OLD HISTORIC AREA

Henrietta place (built in the 1720s as part of the development of Henrietta Street) is a laneway off Henrietta Street and it is often used as a rat-run for cars travelling at speed and and for that reason I would advise walking along it at night and it also attracts a degree of anti-social activity. In the 1930s, the Dublin Corporation demolished most of the houses on Henrietta Place and built a social housing complex in their place. The complex, which is known as Henrietta House, is still in use today.

Henrietta House is a significant example of social housing architecture in Ireland. It was designed by Herbert Simms, who was one of the leading architects of social housing in the early 20th century. Simms’ design for Henrietta House is characterised by its simple, functional form and its use of red brick.

Henrietta Street is located off Bolton Street on the north side of the city. It was first laid out and developed by Luke Gardiner, the First Earl of Mountjoy, in the 1720s. A very wide street relative to streets in other 18th-century cities, it includes a number of very large red-brick city palaces of Georgian design.

Henrietta Street was once one of the most fashionable addresses in Dublin, and was home to many wealthy merchants and professionals. However, the street declined in status in the 19th century, and by the early 20th century, it had become a slum.

In recent years, Henrietta Street was the subject of a major conservation project, and many of the houses on the street were restored.

One of the most notable buildings on Henrietta Street is 14 Henrietta Street, which is now a museum. The museum tells the story of the street’s history, from its early days as a fashionable address to its later years as a slum.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT AT BROADSTONE

The Broadstone tram stop is located on the Luas Green Line, which runs through the city centre of Dublin. The stop is served by trams in both directions, and it is a popular connection for people traveling to and from the Grangegorman University Campus.

The Broadstone tram stop was opened in 2017, as part of the Luas Cross City project. The project extended the Green Line north from St. Stephen’s Green to Broombridge, and it included the construction of a new tram stop at Broadstone.

The Broadstone tram stop is a modern, accessible facility, and it is equipped with ticket machines, seating, and a waiting shelter. The stop is also located close to a number of bus stops, making it a convenient connection for people using public transportation. It is also my local tram stop which I use almost daily in preference to the Dominick Street tram stop.
