THE TREE OF BUTTERFLIES AT THE LIDL PLAZA IN CASTLEKNOCK

In March 2022 Castleknock Tidy Towns welcomed the installation of a public art piece sculpture by Ballina blacksmith/artist John Hogan.

The Tree of Butterflies entitled ‘Flutter’ was installed in the Lidl plaza in Castleknock village. CTT was part of the consultation process with Lidl and Fingal County Council. The over two metre high sculpture is made of iron which is fixed directly onto a plinth into the paving. An accompanying planter containing evergreen perennial grass is due to be placed nearby soon.

CORROSION BY JEN DONNERY

SCULPTURE IN CONTEXT CATALOG REF 049

I decided to check the meaning of corrosion – “Corrosion is a natural process that converts a refined metal into a more chemically stable oxide. It is the gradual deterioration of materials (usually a metal) by chemical or electrochemical reaction with their environment. Corrosion engineering is the field dedicated to controlling and preventing corrosion.”

Her 2020 solo show Mater Materia took place in the Dunamaise Arts Centre; she was shortlisted for the DCCI Future Makers Awards in the same year. Her drawings, paintings and ceramic sculptures engage with themes of maternity, femininity, and the capacity of a woman’s body to produce and nurture human life. Donnery’s work has been selected for the 2019 Ceramics Ireland Selected Members Exhibition at Rathfarnham Castle, Dublin, and Sculpture in Context, 2019, 2020 and 2021 in the National Botanic Gardens. In 2017, she was awarded a residency at the Laois Arthouse for her work in the Dunamaise Open Submission Exhibition.

BIRD OF PARADISE BY BRIAN O’LOUGHLAIN

SCULPTURE IN CONTEXT 2023 CATALOGUE REF 131

Brian has been a full time sculptor for over 20 years. His work is characterised by a warmth and softness in a medium that is hard and dark, often embellished with paint or gold leaf. Each piece is individually, carefully and sympathetically handcrafted to accentuate the natural flow and form of the wood hidden from our eyes for thousands of years. Each piece of art is carved, pared and whittled to release its hidden beauty from below the dark, damp, husky exterior.

PORTAL BY CATHERINE GREENE

NEAR THE UCD SUTHERLAND SCHOOL OF LAW

Abstract: Catherine Greene (b.1960) graduated in sculpture from NCAD in 1984. She is an established figurative sculpture working in bronze and latterly mixed media and lives and works in county Kildare. ‘Portal’ was specially commissioned for the UCD Sutherland School of Law and marks the transition from the outer residential and support areas of the campus into the pedestrianised academic heart of the university. Viewers are invited to walk through the sculpture echoing the allegorical nature of the work.

Today an appointment in Clonskeagh was cancelled and I ended up near the UCD university campus and I had my camera with me. It was a Sony A7RIV but it was configured differently to normal and it was fitted with a Sony E 18-105mm f/4 G OSS ( SEL18105G ) so the A7RIV automatically switched to crop mode. So what is crop mode? The basic concept of crop mode (aka Super 35) is incredibly simple. You’re just cropping the sensor to use the typical APS-C size (1.5x crop). What this means is that you’re achieving a tighter field of view out of your full frame lenses, but at the cost to image quality (megapixels).

To resolve some issues I pre-processed the images using DXO ProRAW … a very slow process.

The build quality of this low cost lens is surprisingly high. The lens body is made of metal based on a metal mount and not only that – it does not extend during focus/zoom actions which is pretty much unique considering the very long zoom range (equivalent to “28-162mm”). It is not a small lens but the package is reasonable compact relative to its range and the constant max aperture of f/4.
