Sculpture In Context

ORIGIN BY ANA DUNCAN

by

CATALOGUE REFERENCE No 5

Over the years I have come to recognise Ana’s sculpture and I find her work to be attractive but this was somewhat different to what I have seen before (maybe because it is not bronze).

Ana Duncan was born in Dublin. She works primarily in bronze and ceramic from her studio in Churchtown. Though the female figure has been a subject of focus, a recent body of work was inspired by patterns and forms in the natural world. Her main influences are the work of Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Botero, Picasso, F.E McWilliam, among others, and the simplicity of Brancusi.

ICARUS THOUGHTS ON FLIGHT AND DAEDALUS THOUGHTS ON FLIGHT

by

BY CATHERINE GREENE

There are two items and both combined are my favourite installation at Sculpture In Context 2023.

Icarus ignored Daedalus’s instructions not to fly too close to the sun, causing the beeswax in his wings to melt. Icarus fell from the sky, plunged into the sea, and drowned. The myth gave rise to the idiom, “fly too close to the sun.”

Catherine E Greene is an established figurative sculptor working in bronze and mixed media. Her versatile output ranges from large scale civic, to private commission and large exhibition pieces to smaller sculptures which explore the figure in the context of the sensual and often surreal world which they inhabit. Major commissions include the equestrian memorial of the patriot Thomas Francis Meagher in Waterford, the Memorial to the much loved comedian Dermot Morgan, Merrion Square Dublin; and the central Alterpiece sculpture of the crucified Christ in the new basilica Fatima Portugal.

THE SORROW BY MICHAEL DUHAN

REF No 53 SCULPTURE IN CONTEXT 2023

I cannot remember seeing anything by Michael at any of the Sculpture In Context exhibitions to date.

One of my favourite sculptures in Ireland is the “Dockers” in Limerick. Limerick born artist Michael Duhan was selected to make a permanent tribute to the Limerick Dockers, as his father was a docker and worked on ships. The dockers performed one of the most difficult and challenging ways to earn a living in the City. This life size bronze sculpture reflects with honesty and integrity the physical work and the camaraderie that existed between the Dockers

Mike Duhan was born in Limerick City in 1956. He attended the Limerick School of Art from 1972 to 1974. He is now a member of and has a studio at Temple Bar Gallery and Studios Dublin. Michael is currently working at National College of Art and Design, Dublin and has worked there since 1982.

He began sculpting in 1984 and had his first exhibition in 1986 at Temple Bar Gallery, Dublin. He would describe himself simply as a figurative sculptor working in several mediums including metals, plastics, and ceramics.
