50 POPE'S QUAY IN CORK CITY
A pivotal moment arrived in the 1990s with the intervention of the newly-formed Cork Civic Trust. The sensitive restoration of 50 Pope's Quay, its first major project, was a foundational act that not only saved a landmark but also catalysed the city's modern heritage conservation movement. This successful adaptive reuse has culminated in its current incarnation as "Arts @ Civic Trust House." Since 2006, it has provided a collaborative home for many of Cork's leading arts organisations, from major international festivals to independent theatre companies. In a poetic turn, the house reputedly built for the "Apollo of the Arts" has become a genuine home for the arts, evolving from a passive heritage object into an active cultural producer that contributes dynamically to the contemporary life of Cork.
