MOUNT JEROME CEMETERY PHOTOGRAPHED JUNE 2023

July 9, 2023 by infomatique

DATE LOGGED BY CAMERA WAS JUNE 2022

I used a Sony RX0 which is not much bigger than a matchbox but I made a mistake when I set the time and date by selecting 2022 instead of 2023. In general I would not recommend this camera as it is very cumbersome to use at the best of times.

The Sony RX is the name of a range of fixed lens compact point-and-shoot digital cameras created by Sony in 2012. All cameras are equipped with Carl Zeiss lenses.
The RX0 was released in 2017. It is a small, tough waterproof camera, with a 1″ sensor. It has a 24mm f4 equivalent Zeiss Tessar T* wide angle lens.

The Funerary Chapel in the cemetery was the first Puginian Gothic church in Dublin. It was designed by William Atkins.

The first official burial happened on the 19th of September 1836. The buried deceased were the infant twins of Matthew Pollock.

The cemetery initially started with a landmass of 26 acres and grew to a size of 48 acres in 1874.

In 1984, burial numbers were falling, thus the Cemetery was losing revenue and began to deteriorate. A crematorium was needed to regain revenue and deal with plant overgrowth on the estate. In 2000, Mount Jerome Cemetery established its own crematorium on the site.

THE MARIAN STATUE AT BROADSTONE

June 19, 2023 by infomatique

HAS IN REALITY BECOME MORE ISOLATED

Because of its colour, or should I say total lack of colour, this Marian statue is not very visible from The Western Way or from Constitution Hill. I know some who are aware of it but did not know that there was a narrow walkway behind it and that there were steps leading up from the street below.

As a result of the the construction of the LUAS tram stop and the Broadstone Gate plaza access to statue should be easier that it was in the past but unfortunately the raised space directly in front of the old Broadstone railway station is uninviting and somewhat unattractive. It, also, acts as a magnet for anti-social activity especially the over consumption of alcohol.

There are hundreds of statues of the Virgin Mary dotted around Ireland and there are at least 26 so called Marian Statues in Dublin and most were put up in the Marian Year of 1954, when entire communities mobilised to erect a statue for their area.

As far as I can tell the majority are are still in good condition and regularly maintained by the people around them.

THE FAMILY VAULT OF ROBERT MANDERS

MOUNT JEROME CEMETERY

This may have been the family that established the Robert Manders & Co, New Brewery, 113 James Street, Dublin.

In 1862 Robert Manders & Co brewery occupied 111-113 at the north side of James Street. The concern was also the business address of the Manders family.

Association with the Phoenix Brewery (Dublin) Ltd. was terminated in 1897 and carried on though restricted to ale brewing until c.1907.

Apart from the brewery they had flour mills at Islandbridge and bakeries at Fownes Street, Moore Street, Church Street, Camden Street, and Baggot Street. The brewery continued until 1909.

Phoenix Brewery (Dublin) Ltd publicly advertised itself as “the largest brewery in Ireland but one”. Founded in 1788 by Charles Madder who by all accounts was a brilliant technical and innovative brewer. He had come from London to brew porter in Dublin. His business and trading activities were poor and the brewery was rescued by one John Brennan and later his son Charles. Essentially a porter brewery with a capacity to produce 350,000 bulk barrels per annum, it launched its own O’Connell’s Dublin Ale. This was probably due to the fact that when they took over Robert Manders & Co’s Brewery, their next door neighbours in 1897 it replaced Mander’s Dublin Ale. It enjoyed a local and export trade however for whatever the reasons it became bankrupt and closed in 1909. The franchise of brewing O’Connell’s Dublin Ale was given to D’Arcys.

ALDERMAN WILLIAM FRY OF 29 PEMBROKE PLACE

BORN 9 JUNE 1804 – DIED 17 JANUARY 1857

The Family Vault of Alderman Fry Pembroke Place 1857… “Until the day break and the shadows flee away” [Song of Solomon 2:17].

Until today I did not have much luck finding any information relating to Alderman Fry or his family. However, I now know that he was born in Dublin 9 June 1804 and died at 29 Pembroke Place 17 January 1857. His mother was Anna Maria Louisa Dawson Lawrence and his father was Thomas Fry. His wife was Evelina Brassington who was also born in 1804 and she died in 1875.

Many guides describe Mount Jerome as being one of the most interesting 19th-century cemeteries in Europe mainly because of the funerary architecture and statuary.

An alderman is a member of a municipal assembly or council in many jurisdictions founded upon English law. The term may be titular, denoting a high-ranking member of a borough or county council, a council member chosen by the elected members themselves rather than by popular vote, or a council member elected by voters.

BECAUSE OF ITS LOCATION ST PATRICK’S CHURCH CAN BE DIFFICULT TO PHOTOGRAPH

I USE A SIGMA DP3 QUATTRO TODAY 26 MAY 2023

According the Wikipedia St. Patrick’s Church is a Roman Catholic church in Ringsend, Dublin … that has to be one of the shortest descriptions that I have come across in Wikipedia.

The following account was published 27 July 2013: St Patrick’s Church, Ringsend, was solemnly dedicated today by the Archbishop Walsh of Dublin. The Church, built in the Gothic style, has been constructed using Irish materials and now comprises sanctuary, transepts, side chapels, two sacristies, a confraternity room and a large store room. The foundation stone on the new Church had only been laid twenty months ago, and the building will serve the population of Ringsend, with Reverend Joseph Mooney serving as Parish Priest. Much of the work has still has to be paid for, and a subscription fund was opened with the Archbishop pledging £1,000 towards the cause.

Saint Patrick at Tara, a stained-glass artwork by the renowned Harry Clarke studios, designed by Harry Clarke and created under his instructions was reported to be in a badly dilapidated state back in 2016. The window was installed in 1923 but had to be removed for emergency restoration work by Abbey Stained-Glass studios in Kilmainham. I am aware that there was a funding problem and I cannot determine if the window has been fully repaired and returned to the church.
