ORIGINALLY ROE’S DISTILLERY SMOCK WINDMILL

SAINT PATRICK'S TOWER WATLING STREET DUBLIN 8

ST. PATRICK’S TOWER AND A GULL [ORIGINALLY ROE’S DISTILLERY SMOCK WINDMILL]

This is the time of year when gulls become aggressive and that can be a problem for a street photographer if they do not pay attention to the warnings issued by the birds guarding their nests. The one in my photograph just came to check what I was at.

You can see St. Patrick at the top of this tower.

If you zoom in at the bottom of this photograph you will see, behind the fence, a clock and a sign saying SIR MATT BUSBY WAY as well as a Dublin Street Sign saying MALTING STREET. I cannot find Malting Street on any online map. I was on Watling Street when I took this photograph.

My father always referred to this as the Guinness Malting Tower but it is in fact what remains of a Smock Windmill which was operated by George Row Whiskey.

Most people now alive in Dublin would never have heard of George Row Whiskey and would be aware that the Roe family operated a very large distillery on Thomas Street. It was in fact the largest Pot Still Distillery in the world.

The now defunct distillery was home to the largest smock windmill in Europe and what remains is known as St. Patrick’s Tower.

There is now a resurgence of interest in Irish Whiskey and the Thomas Street area is once again becoming a vibrant hub of brewing and distilling in Dublin. Roe & Co will be at the heart of this new vibrancy, celebrating the memory of George Roe, a true pioneer who helped build the original golden era of Irish whiskey. By restoring and re-purposing the iconic Guinness Power House as its distillery, Roe & Co is also helping to regenerate Dublin’s ‘Liberties’ D8 district, the home of Irish whiskey during the original golden age of Irish distilling.
