THE VERY POPULAR PEOPLES PARK IN DUN LAOGHAIRE
This is favourite of mine and I visit as often as I can.
The park was developed near the end of the 19th century by the town commissioners in the formal Victorian style, including wrought iron railings, stone walls, large gates and a bandstand typical of the Victorian era.
In 2014, Dún Laoghaire – Rathdown County Council completed an extensive refurbishment of the park to restore its original Victorian layout as well as introduce contemporary interventions to upgrade the park for the 21st century.
An area of new public space has been reclaimed where the DART line once cut the park off from the seafront. This area has been conceived as a raised promenade with prominent views over the park and the coastline. The Raised Promenade forms a new public amenity space which contains generous bespoke seating, picnic table and coastal trees & planting providing a place for rest, relaxation.
The Park features two very attractive cast iron fountains manufactured by the Sun Foundry, Glasgow. In 1985 the fountain nearest the seafront was fully restored to working order and illuminated it. In 1986 the Local Council dedicated the fountain to mark the 70th anniversary of the 1916 Rising, and an inscribed stone paving slab was laid beside it.
The second fountain was restored in 1988 as part of the Council's contribution to mark Dublin's Millennium. An inscribed stone slab was also placed in the surrounding paved area.
