NEW 27 INCH IMAC 2020 ARRIVED ON THE FIRST DAY OF SEPTEMBER

MY NEW 27 INCH IMAC 2020

MY NEW iMAC 2020 27 INCH ARRIVED ON THE FIRST DAY OF SEPTEMBER WHICH WAS TWO WEEKS AHEAD OF SCHEDULE

I HAD A MASSIVE WEEK.

[1] I upgrade to 1G broadband [new modem and TV box]
[2] I ordered an ASUS RT-AX88U Wireless-AX6000 AiMesh Dual Band Gigabit Router
[3] My iMac 27inch was delivered ahead of schedule
[4] Ordered new mouse and keyboard
[4] I have no money left in my bank account

Over the last twenty years I undertook two massive migrations and both proved to be very difficult and expensive. The first was from PC to Mac and the other was from Canon DSLR to Sony Mirrorless. The Canon to Sony proved to be the easier of the two.

The Mac migration was complicated by the fact that Apple switched from PowerPC to Intel. At the 2005 WWDC keynote, Steve Jobs had unexpectedly dropped the news of a phased transitioning of the Mac computers to Intel processors from PowerPC chips. It was a big move by Apple to switch from IBM-built PowerPC processors to x86 processors made by Intel.

As soon as it launched I ordered an iMac 2020 which may be the last Intel based Mac. I had the misfortune of buying a Mac Tower a few weeks before Apple announced their plan to transition to Intel and for me the transition was not a pleasant experience.

My current iMac is close to six years old and it has given me a lot of problems since Christmas and I had decided that it needed to be replaced but I was not planning to make a purchase until next January.

When Apple announced that they would start using their own chips in future Macs I was presented with a major problem as it would not be possible to run Windows on virtual machines on the new Macs.

My new Mac was scheduled to be delivered between 11th and 17th of September [2020] but it actually arrived on the first day of the month.

After much consideration i went with the top end option but selected the 8 core rather than the 10 core CPU because of the possibility of overheating problems. As I am planning to start publishing videos I decided to get the 5700XT GPU and 2TB of SSD. I selected 8G of RAM but installed an extra 32G of third party RAM at a cost of Euro 164.00. Apple charges huge prices for additional RAM.

I must admit that I was disappointed by the little keyboard and I really hate the Apple mouse. My solution was to purchase a Logitech MX Master 3 [Advanced Wireless Mouse for Mac] and a Logitech MX Keys Advanced Wireless Illuminated Keyboard but they have not yet arrived.

Migrating from my 2014 iMac took almost twenty four hours mainly because my old drives were Thunderbolt 2 and I did not have any Thunderbolt 3 or USB-C cables [even though they had been ordered]. Much to my surprise I did not encounter any software issues. Initially I only had 8G of RAM and the machine was [for me] close to unusable ... my usage would not be normal.

I should mention that my Win10 installation running in a Parallels Virtual Machine gave a lot of problems as it would not validate my Windows licence ... I am still working on that issue but I do believe that I have a solution.
