Dublin To Host ICANN’s 54th Public Meeting

Today I attended a meeting about the ICANN 54th.Public Meeting and I got to meet some really interesting people and I also learned a lot about the workings of ICANN.

The panelists were:

  • Michele Neylon, Blacknight
  • Richard Browne, Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Representative of the Republic of Ireland in ICANN’s Government Advisory Committee
  • Maria Farrell, ICANN civil society (NCSG) and InterConnect Communications
  • Jean-Jacques Sahel, VP Europe, ICANN
  • Moderator: Karlin Lillington, Irish Times

Dublin will be the host for the 54th ICANN meeting taking place in October 2015.

Dublin has previously played host to both RIPE and IETF meetings. It is also the venue for Web Summit (now known as The Summit), which attracts several thousand attendees. At this stage I can confirm that I will be attending the Web Summit as well as the ICANN sessions.

A growing number of domain registries are based in Ireland’s capital city. While a few may be using Ireland’s tax regime, others have setup significant operations in the city.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers is a nonprofit organisation that is responsible for coordinating the maintenance and methodologies of several databases, with unique identifiers, related to the namespaces of the Internet - and thereby, ensuring the network's stable and secure operation.

Much of its work has concerned the Internet's global Domain Name System, including policy development for internationalisation of the DNS system, introduction of new generic top-level domains (TLDs), and the operation of root name servers. The numbering facilities ICANN manages include the Internet Protocol address spaces for IPv4 and IPv6, and assignment of address blocks to regional Internet registries. ICANN also maintains registries of Internet protocol identifiers.

ICANN performs the actual technical maintenance work of the central Internet address pools and DNS Root registries pursuant to the IANA function contract.

ICANN's primary principles of operation have been described as helping preserve the operational stability of the Internet; to promote competition; to achieve broad representation of the global Internet community; and to develop policies appropriate to its mission through bottom-up, consensus-based processes.

ICANN was created on September 18, 1998, and incorporated on September 30, 1998. It is headquartered in the Playa Vista section of Los Angeles, California.

In September 29, 2006, ICANN signed a new agreement with the United States Department of Commerce (DOC) that moves the organisation further towards a solely multistakeholder governance model.

On October 1, 2009 the U.S. Department of Commerce gave up its control of ICANN, completing ICANN's transition.
