MERRION SQUARE PARK - THE OLD STANDARD LAMPS ARE ALL GONE
More than a year has passed since I last photographed this park and there have been no real change other than one really big change - all the old lamps are gone.
Back in 2009 Frank McDonald of the Irish Times was very critical of the array of 25 old lamp standards included within the park. He described their very poor condition and that they had been erected in a haphazard fashion.
At the time I could not located as many as 25 lamps and I did not fully agree with all his comments. But I did agree that many of them were in poor condition and some appearrd to consist of unrelated parts. I also believed that the collection as a whole gave the impression as not being quite right.
So, when I visited today nearly ten years later I was surprised to discover that I could not locate even one of the old lamps.
